Hey Guys/Gals

For my N+ practical exam at my college I need to be able to do the following. (Please note I have tried to do these but it never works for some reason)

Note I work with 2 pc's. One is running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (Server) and other is Windows XP PRO (Client) Aim is to connect them.

1) Create user groups and accounts. This is pretty much the only thing that I do, that works out.

2) Install and Configure DHCP Server in Win server 2003; then connect the XP client to it. However my XP client never recieves an assigned IP address.

3) Install_and_configure_windows_2003_dns_server.

4) Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller and DNS Server Setup; this is pathetic the XP machine can not see the domain controller etc.

What is the correct order I should do the above following steps? Any help would be appreciated etc.

What are you using to connect the 2 computers?

So you know to use a crossover cable when you don't have a switch?

Assign a static ip to the XP pc and see if you can ping the server.

Yes, but its going through a switch etc. I assigned a static IP and it worked fine. However well I need it to work with DHCP

Setting up the DHCP Server is very simply

1. Open DHCP Server mmc console
2. Create a new scope which is basically next -> next -> next -> finish

Its not the setting up thats the problem. Its that the XP machine refuses to be assigned an ip address from the server

its weired cause normally its piss easy. Not sure why its not working ? You say the built in xp firewall is off ? or is it just grayed out.If its grayed out then it my be Group Policy on the Server thats forcing the winxp machine to use the firewall

It is off, btw coming back to the other problems. Are their any specific steps I should do them in?

First domain or dhcp etc?

From the Server side its 1st - domain then DHCP

From workstation side - it doesnt make a difference. But obviously u need to get have an IP ( static or DHCP ) before u can join domain

------------------------------------------

Quickly on the DHCP SERVER , is there a green upward arrow on the DHCP Server mmc console. This means that your DHCP Server has been authorized. If its red then it wont assign ip

--------------------------------------------

Maybe u could even try resettting the TCP/IP winsock.Download a app called "Winsockfix.exe".It helped me before when ive had "unexplained" networking errors.

When should I setup the DNS on the Server?

Their is a green upwards arrow on the server, this is so weird I know.

I'll try the winsockfix.exe

OK this is the order for the Server

1. Give server a computer name
2. reboot server
3. give server an ip address + DNS
ie ip - 192.168.0.1
subnet - 255.255.255.0
dns - 192.168.0.1

note - the DNS ip is the same as the server's IP

4. go start -> run -> cmd -> run "dcpromo"
This will create your domain and also automatically install your DNS.Belive me you dont want to create the DNS the manual way
5. Once wizard finishes , it will ask to reboot server
6. Once server comes back up you will have created the Domain + DNS
7. Now install DHCP
8. WinXP client should be able to get IP from DHCP Server
9. Join the WinXP pc to the domain
