Simply put, Windows Server 2008 support ends on 14 January 2020 and you wouldn't want your server to run on an end-of-life software/OS.

Windows Server 2008 operated when business demands were a fraction of what they are today and before the modern capabilities of the Cloud.

Servers still running Windows Server 2008/R2 after End of Support run the risk of being completely unsupported and unprotected, as Microsoft will no longer provide security fixes after the EOS date of 14 January 2020.

Windows Server 2016 & Windows Server 2019’s enhanced security protects at the identity, OS, and virtualization layers to disrupt attacks and isolate vulnerable targets. Support is continuing until at least 2023.
