Windows Vista Beta 2

@disabled - I am sure there is a way - I think Windows has got a way of transferring all your settings and data to a new PC if I remember correctly - surely Vista will also have it  . While I have ordered the Beta and RC I am in 2 minds now if I will install it on my PC. Everything is just running so smoothly:p
Why they did it like that I don't know..... but then I doubt if I can wait till it is released finally..
I must say, XP is the only Win OS I have not had to reload every 4-6 months or so - it just keeps on going w/o problems.

Well I wouldn't advise anyone to install a Beta version of an OS on your their main/work PC at all.

Rather use a second harddrive or partition and dual-boot. And remember, if anything goes wrong MS won't help you.

Now here is something quite interesting that some could perhaps confirm.

The day that Vista was released, I decided to download over ADSL. I have access to 2 accounts, so I thought I should be able to dl it between the 2. When the download using the Microsoft downloader reached 92%, I got a crtical error. I have been beta testing MS products since Windows 98 and have downloaded a great number of beta with absolutely no problems before.

Since then, I have not found it possible to download the 32 bit version through either of the 2 Telkom ADSL accounts. I get a "network error" everytime since the initial download. The 64 bit version is available as a 13.4 MB download or something similar which is incorrect.

I cannot download the stand-alone file with DAP 8 whilst Internet Download Manager is able to download fine at over 50 KB/s. I am waiting for this file to finish as we speak.

Now here is the catch. I hooked up my 3G phone, and connect to the MS downloader evrytime perfectly (corect file size, 32 bit version). I thought the ActiveX component of the Windows downloader was perhaps corrupt on the Telkom ADSL machine, deleted it, re-installed it and had the same network error! Is it possible that Telkom has blocked this download through the ADSL accounts? I have not exceeded my bandwidth as I am downloading perfectly as we speak at over 50 KB/s??

I look forward to thoughts on this... Fair practice?

i doubt telkom would let you get to 92% i mean whats the point

no they cannot block it

i was going to d/l it but what for?
will just wait

i got windows that looks like vista
i will wait for it to be finished and released :)

@killadoob
I don't think they waited until I hit any particular percentage. It just seems to me that they have been able to block that particular download. I can download it with any other connection, just not the ADSL one...

i wanna see you download that with 56k or isdn

then let it get to 92% see if the same thing happens

might take a week or so with dial up but give it a bash :)

:D True!

I checked on dialup and it was fine as well as 3G phone - just very strange to me.

Checked a Mywireless connection and also cannot download the 32 bit version using their download manager.

if ur guys r in cape town, hook up to ctwug, the 32bit and 64bit is available for download

what ctwug?

some download managers have problems

i use internet download manager and i tried to download some hp drivers, it got to 99% then told me it could not rebuild the files

this happened 3 times before i used mozilla built in manager and it worked

some files just give crap
yea flaahget is good for IE

Ok finally got Vista installed. M$ decided to be clever as usual, and not include even basic nForce 4 IDE drivers with the beta. Then on top of that, they disabled the "F6" function like that in XP, so the only way to install Vista Beta 2 on a PC running an nForce4 chipset is via Windows XP. You have to start the installer in XP, then it gives u the option to load drivers, and only after you have done that can you safely install Vista.

I am loving Vista so far, been playing around with it for a few days now. The only thing that is really bothering me is the amount of memory that it chows. At idle, just after a reboot, i am using approx 600MB, which is really scarry if u ask me. I am hoping that this is just the debugging and error modules that are loaded in the beta, and not something that is permanent... but with M$ you never know. If it is normal, then here comes another grand for an extra gig of RAM.

Anyone in the PTA/Centurion area willing to make me a copy of the x64 version?

Tried to download it but to no avail.
Ordered my copy from MS too, but I cannot wait that long for delivery.

Please! :D
Thanks!

lol killa, i know RAM isn't expensive any more, but yeah, still dont want to be forced to waste money on it ;)

on the raid front, it all depends what board you running. My dd loaded it without a problem, but he is running RAID on a Intel 975X board. He would still need to load RAID drivers for the controller, but at least this option would be given to him. The issue that I had was that MS decided not to include any IDE/SATA drivers for the most popular AMD chipset (nForce 4). When it tries to look for any drives where it can install Vista, it just bombs out, saying that no drives were present. It doesnt give you an option to load drivers at all.

The solution to this problem is this:
1) Install Windows XP on a partition of the RAID array with all it's drivers and goodies
2) From inside Windows XP insert Vista DVD and then start installation
3) When you get to the drive selection screen, load all your RAID drivers, and then only select which partition you want to install Vista on
4) Voila, you have Vista

In terms of games killa, I really wouldnt know. Apparently in the Toms article, they tried playing games and said that nothing works. That is why i am running in Dual Boot, when i wanna play BF2, i just load up XP, when i wanna stuff around on the net i fire up Vista

Hope this helps
Cheers

Hmm.. at the rate my download is going... won't someone PLEASE offer to write this to DVD for me, and post it off? I will of course reimburse you the amount you think is fair.

I did order it from Microsoft, but that'll take up to 28 days for delivery... which is a bit too long for me.

mic_y, yes, vista does give the the normal f6 option...it isnt exactly in large red font with a big "PRESS HERE" sign, but it is there.

it is actually labelled "Load drivers" and is on the screen where vista asks where it should install itself....just after the windows key code screen

werner, that is where you are a bit wrong. You see, the thing is that since Vista doesnt come bundled with any nForce drivers what so ever, the installer (if you boot from the DVD) says that there are no HDD's. After that you can do nothing. It doesnt ask for any serials, since it cant see any possible place to install itself, and just gives u an error message of that kind. This doesnt happen on (for example) Intel-Chipset based boards, because the basic IDE drivers are already included in Vista. You will still need to load RAID drivers, but at least it will be able to detect some kind of controller...

On another note, has anybody had any kinds of problems with Vista and Nod32 v2.50??? I have had a few issues with it, where after I install it, svchost.exe starts eating away 99% CPU usage... Dont know where the problem lies, because I have read in multiple places on the internet that Nod32 is compatible with Windows Vista...
