Windows Vista drivers

Is it worth downloading the 101.41 drivers or not? How is the performance versus 100.41?

Allot better in 3dmark. I have no way to verify game performance since fraps doesn't work under vista. But in the release notes they do mention it fixes a few bugs of a few games like battlefield,quake 4, the sims2,madden 2007, middle earth 2,etc.

If you have sli these drivers are essential they are the first to implement it for gf6 and 7 series.

I suspect that if the performance boost in 3dmark as as much as I am getting there will be a boost in games aswell but I can't confirm nor deny this.

Right, I have just downloaded the 101.41 drivers and installed them. If anything, my FPS is actually worse. The stuttering has also noticeably increased!

Here are my specs:

AMD 3800+ Socket 939 (single core, 2.4GHz)
Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLi
2GB Corsair XMS DDR400 TwinX
GeForce 7900GT 512MB (factory overclocked)
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Windows Vista performance rating:
Processor = 4.2
RAM = 5.0
Graphics = 5.9
Gaming graphics = 5.8
Primary hard disk = 5.7

In Counter-Strike: Source I had 150FPS+ on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 with the NVIDIA Forceware 93.71 WHQL drivers, whilst I now have around 40FPS (dropping to about 4 or 5 FPS every few seconds) on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with the NVIDIA Forceware 101.41 drivers. I also have no background apps running, in case you are wondering.

Can someone please tell me why is my FPS so low and my FPS stutters irregularly? I suspect it's the drivers... Anyone able to confirm this?

Did you uninstall the previous drivers before installing the new ones or just installed the newer ones. I can't comment on cs since I don't play fps games.

I have noticed any decrease in performance of my games. Fifa 2007,NWN 2 and Oblivion run about the same.

I uninstalled the older drivers (100.65) and when my PC restarted it installed the Microsoft drivers for the card. I then installed the new ones (101.41).

I can understand why the FPS would be (marginally) lower, as NVIDIA stated a while back that they are first going for stability instead of performance. What I can't quite figure out is why I have lost over 110FPS (and, of course, the stuttering)?

Any other ideas or advice?

Is the stuttering only cs or other games aswell??

Maybe try reverting back to the old drivers if they were running better?? Do you have a restore point before you installed the new drivers. Or wait for newer drivers. These are the options I can think of.

I think I'll wait for better drivers. Maybe even revert back to Windows XP Professional for the time being.

I just received Windows Vista. Should I install it, is it worth it? Anyone got any comments? thanks

Depends what system you have. You could wait for the first dx10 game to appear or jump straight in. It really depends what you use your pc for and if your hardware currently has drivers or not.

If you need printing and have a hp printer don't install it or duol boot. There's no support for hp printers even if hp on their site claims drivers come with vista. they don't vista just detects the printer is anohter device.

Strange, my Windows Vista detected my HP Deskjet5550 immediately, installed the drivers (which were included on Windows Vista) and it worked!

Personally I'd say you can go for Vista, but be prepared to wait a while for proper drivers to come out. Some people have trouble, some don't.

My deskjet 5150 is just listed as another device. Still waiting for there supposed long term driver. They can't seem to even release beta drivers.

Haven't had any negative experiences with HP in the past so I won't be able to concur... My HP has always been fine.

Sad truth is if you own anything other than DX10 hardware in Vista you're pretty much fawxed. Sure drivers will improve but you can forget about performance boosts in all the non DX10 aware titles as it just won't happen.

On the other hand if you own DX10 class gpu then things will just keep getting better. Right now for me Vista is faster than XP in the games
