Windows Vista RC1 available

Using the same filter I always use ffdshow. Funny thing some actually do play.

At least when explorer crashes it recovers very quickly compared to XP. A step in the right direction. Shorter crashes :D
 
I've never had a crash trying to play DivX movies and if they dont play in wmp I just use VLC.
 
Its not about playing them, rather opening a folder with thumbnail views and then the explorer crashes.

but I guess that would mean you cant play them, but I have had the same thign and they stil lplayed fine if you opened them straight from a player.

btw, I would also like 64bit Vista, how bad would all the software etc be in RC1? So im right in assuming you cant use any 32bit software and every thign you use has to have a 64bit version made right? So what about things like Iburst drivers?
Well, I dont need Iburst drivers actualyl, but smaller companies like my soundcard that maby dont have 64bit drivers, would I just be screwed then?

Oh, and id have to get all my games in 64bit right? Doesnt sound worth it..

You think you're tough? Then try running Windows Vista in x64 mode: It can make a grown man wail like a little girl whose brother just catapulted Barbie over the fence. What's insidious about it is that the first impressions are deceptively good: After installing the thing in under 30 minutes and watching it recognize every single piece of hardware connected to my PC, I started installing applications thinking that this, finally, might be the time to move fully to x64 on my desktop machine.

Big mistake. Applications like Microsoft Office work just fine on the x64 versions of Windows Vista, but almost nothing else does. Adobe Photoshop won't install at all, citing an unspecified compatibility issue. Ditto for Virtual PC 2004. And AnyDVD. And Nero. And iTunes.

Yikes.

Then there are the applications that install just fine but silently fail in different ways when running. The Flickr Uploader application is a good example: This one installs as you'd expect. But when you right-click an image file to upload it, there's no Send to Flickr option in the pop-up menu. The reason is simple: Shell extensions for 32-bit applications won't work in x64 Windows versions. So applications like WinZip and WinRAR will have similar issues.

Quite quickly, it became obvious that x64 was going to be a nonstarter for me. So I wiped out the install and reinstalled the 32-bit version. And now, everything works. I'm so glad that only lasted half a day. Learn from my mistakes and just skip x64 unless you really know what you're doing. Or maybe you just hate yourself.

Well luckily I dont use any of those applications except fo rNero, which im shure I can find an alternative to. But I know your right, I dont know why i even thought about it, Ive heard so much about it. A friend of mine even used XP 64bit and had to uninstall it. By the time Vista comes out wit ha 64bit version official and all the Intel 64bit chips have been around longer it should be almost fine. I'll probably try it out then.
 
ROFL, MS is such a joke... phoned them just now, and asked if they have the RC1 ISO on their network and if I could possible come through to their offices to write it to a DVD. and they tell me that they only getting it on 6 weeks.

BWAHAHA, come on, at least get your own stuff on time.
 
Downloaded and installed it last night, used beta 2 key and it worked, wow, what a improvement. Looks and feels smooth, just had to load the driver for my monitor, the rest self installed.

The OS is getting some good reviews with the RC1 release, ntfs permission problem with my domain as it doesn't inherit from parent.

I installed it last night and there is a massive difference in speed on my machine. Very smooth!

Titan Quest on max settings has no jerkiness at all. Even IE and Outlook 2007 open in a snap. :D
 
Can you install Vista in Virtual PC? I'm wondering if I should try that first or just clobber my XP install with it?

Anyway about 2 more hours to go on the download.

Did you guys download with ADSL, iBurst, ..? I'm on a 128k wireless, so I think it's gonna take a week. Are the links from http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm still in operation 'cos i tried the 32bit and FDM was downloading the file with no file size:confused:

rc1 working VERY well - i'm quite impressed - the only problem sofar - can't get nero to work - Nero has not released a Vista Edition as yet. - Anybody else know of other software that isnt vista compatable ?
 
I've got Nero 6.6.1.4 installed on vista and it works perfect, I know upon installation vista will say that this product may not be compatible blah blah and do you want check online for a possible fix or something, just ignore or skip it, burnt a couple of music cd's and a dvd home movie, used wave editor and it all works perfect.

I got ver 7.xxxxx and it installed halfway and then crashed - however, nero.exe (nero burning rom) that was installed works perfectly. Only the other addons in the Nero suite won't work. But seems as if Nero is also redundant as I burned a DVD using the built in Vista mastering software and it works fine - you must just manually create the Audio_ts and Video_ts folders on yr DVD and install the vobs to the video_ts folder as per normal. As with XP, Vista also has its own built in CD burning software.

Also installed CloneDVD and it works fine in Vista - no probs. Funnly enough, Nokia PC suite works like a charm :eek:
FrontPage crashes when opening the 2nd time (when it tries to load the previous web site you worked on). A restart starts FP up with no previous web site loaded and you can manually load yr website and do your editing and FTP'ing with no problems.

So far so good.... My Movie Collector works fine but you have to kill the process manually when closing the application as it does not kill it automatically - Apparently the authors of the program are aware of this and will fix it i.d.c.

Any DVD works fine...

My WinFast TV / FM card works fine after running the program compatibility software on the installed .exe file. :D

Like the feature where you can use a USB flash memory card and let Vista use that for extra memory.
So far so good - I will be getting the final version if this goes so well!! :)
 
How did you get it for 86 bucks, is it also the beta ver.

Guys I have in my hands the sealed dvds of both 32 & 64 bit versions, delivered by DHL today :D . The total cost (which included delivery) amounted to R 87.00 which went off my account last week. The package was dispatched from MS Germany :D

There is a prolem with ordering online, MS SA came to the assistance :).
