Hi
Does any1 know where the updates for windows vista get stored once its downloaded before it get installed on my HDD?
I want to save it somewhere so that i dont have to download it again if anything should happen and i loose the partition or the info.

I'm not sure about Windows Vista but I know Windows XP stored it's temporary update files in the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder (I don't think it does that any longer). Maybe use something like Acronis True Image to make a copy of your Windows partition? :)

Indeed its there also for vista
thx 4 da help

Although its not the installation files - its .CAB files and other

Ok
just found out how to do it!
Its in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Burn the download folder to a disk and just copy and paste into the same directory for future reinstalls.

For any1 who is interested!

man thats a great tip for vista users.
beanie should ad that to the H and S section faq..:D
nice one quik1...;)

all the automatic updates are stores in the above folder prior to actually installing - works on 2000,Xp, 2003, Vista

Is vista clever enough to install update(x) before update (y) if both are present tho?
Could'nt this cause a bit of screwup when x has to be already installed before y is applied?

I think that it is actually clever enough - although when i restarted i got a BSOD - sorted it out though - it was a doggy driver, well actually it was Alcoholsoft that didnt want to work anymore
Quik repair - boot to another OS or live cd - browse to "vista drive" eg: C:\ Windows\System32\Drivers and delete a347scsi.sys and a347bus.sys

Solved It

PS: Reinstall alcohol after restarting - it takes a bit long for vista to configure the updates (i had 260 odd updates) but it works afterward

same solution for XP SP3
and install the latest version though:D

Cool.....so it installed them in the order it needed too, that what your saying?

yes - at least i think so - i didnt look at the order of the updates it was installing. It downloads all of the files and then installs them one by one, so yes i would say that it installed it in the order that it was downloaded, and it downloaded in the order of the date - older first then newer.

;)

Yip - even NT could do that. You run all the patches and then run qchain and it sorts out all the file versions. Now its all built into auto updates.
