I am going to switch to xp 64 bit in the hope this kills my BSODS that I keep getting due to ****ty onboard sound thanks realtek - so far ive updated bios/sound drivers/tried diff 32 bit xps/now for 64 bit if that doesnt work I will be forced to move to vista - all hardware is fine in Ubutunu (go figure)

Anyhow my actual question is are there diff service packs for 32/64 bit xp , I presume so - y/n - I reckon yes.

Thanks
J

Yes, you must remember XP x64 is based on Server 2003 (its stripped down) so you might experience compatibility issues. New drivers etc. SP2 for XP x64 or for Server 2003 X64 is the same one.

At the moment there is no SP3 for that platform

What's the problem with your sound? Explain?

I'm running XP64 with SP2 on the machine in my sig. No hassles whatsoever. And it offers way better performance than Vista64 as well.

I have also ran xp 64bit for the past 2 years now and only found 2 snags so far. Programs like total copy's right click drag feature doesn't work (I have tried 3 or 4 varients, none of which seem to work). And the fact that there is no active desktop was initially a problem cause the program I used for my desktop calendar used that feature, until I discovered rainlendar.

Otherwise I have never had any problems with games, perfromance, crashes or any other programs.

Is it wrong to use 32 bit software on xp64? e.g. i found that my 32 bit sound drivers work, not so for my wifi and some others - do I need 64 bit nvidia drivers as well etc or do the 32 bit ones work - bandwidth is tight till end of month :P

Thanks
J

for some things you will prob have to dl 64 bit drivers

and for others the 32 bit counterparts work fine? e.g. im downloading the 64 bit nvidia drivers and file size is almost identical to the 32 bit ones - does it make a diff in most cases since it seems to be backwards compatible with some things....

Thanks
J

if there is a 64 bit driver then it is needed ie nvidia drivers and sound drivers fall into that category as well

You should never use 32bit drivers on a 64bit system

Sure they do but good luck getting support if you used a 32bit driver instead of the recommend 64bit version
