Windows XP for cheap laptops

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project will install Windows XP on its low-cost laptops for students in developing countries, according to a joint announcement on Friday. The operating system will be offered as an alternative to the project's home-grown Linux-based operating system.

Yeah it would be. I'd rather just stick to Linux, however. :D

Not me thank you very much. I'm off expensive drugs with bad after-tastes in both your mouth and your pocket and onto cheap drugs that keep you addicted for life. :D

If XP was available to everyone at $3, piracy of that OS would be negligible:D.
In the UK, a version XP is now sold for 13GBP. I saw these prices, (dealer price, ex VAT)
OEM XP starter edition R 225
OEM Vista starter edition R 258
The question is what did M$ cripple in these versions and is it still functional in practical terms?

You can get Vista Starter here for R400. But what the heck for? It's like a degraded version of XP Home.

Hell, I didn't even know there was a starter edition of XP.

I'd also like to know what is stripped out.

You get Vista Starter Edition (not sure if it is the same as Vista Basic) with the really low-end pc's. It comes, to the best of my knowledge, without Media Player and other niceties.

My laptop has Vista Home Basic and it did have Media Player, so I'm guessing the starter edition is lower down on the Vista hierarchy.

vista basic is a total waste of time and anything lower than that i wouldn't bother with, hell even linux is better than vista basic!

Hell, Linux is better than all Vistas....

Are MS or the OLPC people going to do anything about changing the Windows UI? The UI they currently run has been designed to be used by children, is intuitive & easy to use for anybody, even if they've never seen a PC before. Things that Windows is definitely not.

I'd bet that a seat-of-the-pants reaction from a bunch of ignorant beaureacrats caused them to go down this road.

Hopefully somebody teams up with Acer, get Sugar on a cut down (even more) eeePC.

Give me a break. Linux beats *any* version of Windo$e

o it's good, but i can't do what i want with it all my apps and games are windoze based , if they ran on linux i would use it for sure.

It isn't really Linux's fault that game and app makers are short sighted, but improvements on Wine will see even photoshop being able to run on Linux;)

Photoshop can already run on Wine. Just not the current version. Some Adobe products run on Wine too. CS2, though, not CS3. They are still working on that.

it's not economical viable for them to make games that will run on linux. Have tried wine in vain ,just didn't want to work mandrake.
