Is a windows Xp Liscen transferable from PC to Pc.. had a hardware failure and need to replace the pc ... can use the windows sticker on the old box ?

Depends if it is an OEM copy of Windows. (came with the PC) then no!

If you bought a retail edition of XP then you may install it on the other PC.

It DEPENDS primarily on local law. In the EU it is, EULA or no EULA. The EULA does not override LOCAL laws. In SA it's probably 'illegal'.

In SA if your OEM h/w died, the vendor should supply you with new h/w (and OEM OS). This is why some places have consumer
laws and first sale doctrines, others just don't care.

If it is a DSP version, then no. You can't do it "legally".

But that does not mean it can't be done. I have called and spoken to the activation lady and when she asked "is this the same machine?" I said, "yes" (because the new one was replacing the old one). In my mind it is a repair job, not a completely new machine... it is not like the old one works anymore. Totally fair if you ask me... although Microsoft would like to make two sales out of the deal.

True but something tells me greggpb lives in South Africa.

Btw OEM will only replace your hardware if it is still under warranty.

Yes he prolly does, just pointing out that corporate greed is held back in some locations while not in others.

This is a really greedy policy by Microsoft ... this is why you should use open source where possible instead so you are not locked in by these silly licences....

Busy with a pilot project which replaces

winxp -> unbuntu
Msoffice -> OpenOffice
Outlook -> Evolution

Still about a month or 2 away from having a descent stable Client PC image.

The pc's are used for email, internet access , admin and one dos based system.. that is giving a bit of trouble..

But almost there..
