Police on Monday suspended warrant officer Jannie Odendaal after he opened criminal cases against Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and her two bodyguards.

The warrant officer opened cases of obstruction of justice and assault against the three on Sunday, following an altercation in December. Odendaal and another officer allegedly stopped Madikizela-Mandela’s car for speeding on the highway.

Trade union Solidarity’s Dirk Hermann said Odendaal was being victimised for standing up to the political elite.

“He just did his work,” said Hermann. “Nobody actually in the whole police force at this stage stands with him from the administration side.”

He added that Odendaal’s letter of suspension did not specify the reason for the suspension. The letter, which came into effect on Monday, said the charges could result in his dismissal.

Hermann added that Odendaal was disappointed, but he was going to fight the matter.

The police could not be reached for comment.

Everybody knows what those reasons are. You don't try to tell somebody in the ANC who is above the law to obey the law. :D
 
In this country crony-ism is king. And too many are getting ahead or protecting the next guys because of who they know rather than what they know.
 
It is such a lovely message being sent out to the masses. This basically makes a mockery of our police men and woman. Jeez....why anyone would want to become one these days god only knows...apart from those that of course is in it for the bribes etc. tsk tsk.

Don't worry.... They are probably being informed by their glorious leaders that the "racist" cop will be removed along with all the other vestiges of colonialism and bladdy agentism that are still infesting our police force. ;)

I agree he needs support but you have to wonder why the likes of the opposition party aren't getting involved.
 
I feel sorry for Odendaal as he obviously has many years in the force with lots of experience teaching the Constable the ropes and this is what he gets in return.

I hope the suspension is merely procedural and does not tarnish the officers records.
Incidents like this just make me dislike (wanted to use the word hate) politicians even more. What the heck are we working and paying taxes for? So that people can drive around at high speed and when challenged are above the law because they are politicians. Clearly there is something missing in our Society when people think they are above the law, because as far as I know the law applies to each and every one of us irrespectively from the President right down to the street sweeper.

I mean what was the rush as the politicians do buggerall anyway.
 
In a proper democracy something like this would be enough to bring a government down !

Makes me believe that there is more to this story, like he overstepped an instruction regarding the case.
