Wired or Wireless Network?

if you get the right wireless equipment you should do ok, but bandwidth will be lower than wired always, but you can setup a 25 pc room and actually have no connection issues, just get the right stuff!

Wired and Wireless have different appliations

Wired is for static/stationary PCs that want a stable fast transfer

Wireless is for mobile eg laptops moving PCs oftion. slower transfer

It's not an issue of having a newer technology installed... If you want that then in fibre to desktop. then you have something that will last... i little while.

If the 25 PCs are going to be there longer then 1 year wire it. If it is a temp. solution go wireless. but then again cost.

25 X R250 cheap wifi cards = R6250.00
I'm sure you will want to have some Access Points in place
5 X R750 = R3750.00
total = R10 000.00 + Labour and as someone said cost of aspirin

Wired
25 X R100 for NIC = R2 500.00
2 X 16 Port switch @ R500 = R 1 000.00
25 X R200 for cable = R 5 000.00
Total = 8 500.00

But in the end It all depends on the application.
I love wireless. but in this case I would say go Wired.

BTW. I think R300 is the going rate for a network point. yes you can always get cheaper but how long will that company last with those prices and yes you can always do it cheaper yourself.

Yes, it also worked fine for me most of the time. But after my wife experienced a couple of connection drops midway through long internet games and made sure to share her "happiness" with me, I bought the longer cable.

The brief delay while the re-authenticate happens is enough to kill practically any active online game. And I am not willing to run without security enabled.

So, having these random hassles with 25 PC's do not sound like fun to me.
your wife plays online games on a laptop! cool  :D

most PCs got build-in wired NICs so the 25x100 is most likely not applicable

how far appart are those PCs? Last time I checked CAT5 cable was about R2 per meter, R200 will buy you about 100 meters of cable! I really doubt they are that far appart!

Besides that, if it is reasonably big office, it is very stupid to connect each PC directly to the 2x16 port switches! Better buy multiple small switches, connect adjacent PCs to the small switches and then connect the small switches to the main one which can be something little bigger! This way you can have only single cable running long distances and only small patch cables for each PC!

I think the cost for the wired network parts will be about R2000-2500

Hey

Just a quick question voodoo, why do you want to go wireless? i only read a few of the post and most of them are about the price. Are you looking to hook all the pcs up for internet (gaming, webhosting, etc) or for file, printer sharing etc? For the latter its definately wired.

swordfish - you are right most NIC are built in

the R200 for cable should have read R200 per point. and yes one can get it cheaper making it all the more reason to go wired.

but yes the point is. It is a lot cheaper to put in wired so I guess wired it should be!

cisco_trouble welcome to the forum.

I think you hit the nail on the head. what is the appliaction for the PCs and how often will the move... if ever

Thanks guys, reading through all the advice, it seems wired is the way to go.

Now where is my crimping tool? LOL

Wireless network you are looking at:
25 X R299 = R7475 .00
4 X R499 = R 1996 .00
1 x R2599 = R2599 .00
Total of R 12 070 .00 Thas for a good stable wireless network.

Wired your looking at:
25 X R49 = R1125
100m X 10 X R14.4\m = R1440 .00
Thats a total of R2565 .00 for a faster more stable network.
