Wired will block content for users who use ad-blockers

Then I'll disable my adblock on the Wired site for as long as I need to read the specific article I'm interested in. You knew we could do that, didn't you?

Will people more people stop using adblock or stop going to Wired?

Well if nothing else this was successful clickbait :erm:

Visited the site and doubt I'll be returning so Adblock FTW :D

Adblock or Wired?

Adblock it is then.

It's more of an indication of a growing trend.

This is cool though:

Add Wired to their ad blocker’s whitelist, so you view ads.
Subscribe to an ad-free version of Wired for $1 a week.

So you can choose how you want to support the site. I like this.

I don't see how they can know whether or not someone is blocking their ads. Ad blocking is done on the client side.

It's possible, I've been to a few sites telling me I'm running Adblock and to please disable the blocker while on their site. Needless to say, I didn't, and found what I needed elsewhere.

Adblock Plus is actually filtering the content before it hits your browser. Ad engines can measure how many browsers don't display the adverts, and most of them can actually break things down into how many people use ad blockers, and can even tell you which ones they use.

Edit: This article goes into some detail about it > https://econsultancy.com/blog/67076-the-rise-and-rise-of-ad-blockers-stats/

Yeah saw it on pornhub.
Looks like you've enabled AdBlock. Ads suck. Why don't you try the new Premium? It has everything you know and love but with 1080p, full-length videos and NO ADS.×

Fine, I will just use a browser that is physically incapable of rendering adverts for wired.

I don't mind ads if they're done right. Most sites hit you with ads left, right and centre though, or the ads are really distracting, so I disable them. I give all my most used sites a chance to present me with ads.

Good example of how not to do ads:

Oh well, if its an important article I'll disable the AdBlocker for a period of time... for random content, I'll just find it elsewhere.
