Im pretty clueless regarding this stuff. Im getting my ADSL next week and getting either a D-Link or Netgear router. Both capable of wireless connectivity.

Ive only got my laptop and would like to set the connection up so that I can connect anywhere in the house.

Here is what i do not understand:

1. Can the router/modem stand on its own. For example: Plugged into power supply and connected to phone jack. NOT CONNECTED TO LAPTOP VIA ETHERNET OR USB

2. Can I use the Route Sentry application with the set-up as described above?

I truly appreciate all your input and advice to help me understand this better.

1.) Yes your router would be entirely independent.

as for your second question, someone else would have to answer that for you.

With RouteSentry you create the "dial up" connections on your computer independent of the router. You would need to create the dial up to "connect using" (under properties>options) your wireless network adapter instead of your ethernet adapter.

Obviously you would set up your router while connected directly to a computer, and then once it is set up, you can let it stand on its own.

Thanks. I starting to understand now. Just a little bit ;)

Now to find the correct Router and signing up @ Nexus

In short, the router IS a pc. It has a processor, RAM, and a network adapter. It's very simple though, and doesn't run Windows, of course (Although, you can load Linux on some).
This router manages security on the network, as well as connecting to the internet.

I don't know how big your house is, but the signal is normally not that good over a distance and if there are a lot of walls in between. And with all the security risks you have with the wireless, I don't know if that is the way to go, unless you know someone who can set it up securely for you?

The phone line where the router will be standing is very central and close to the 2 main rooms where i want to use the laptop. (3 to 6 meter)

As for setting it up - I'll have to ask a friend to set it up from scratch as I am not to clued up regarding networking. He is quite the specialist regarding this stuff but away on business in Saudi. That is why I rushed to the best option after him - MyBB.

I a not to sure if he knows RouteSentry that well and will have to set that up with the help of you guys.
