wireless cannot ping router but signal is excellent

I have a Pro/Wireless 2915ABG wireless card. I'm trying to access the Telkom 5102G router from a different room. When i view available wireless networks, i do pick it up my access point with full strength. When i press connect, it takes a while and would not connect. I can't even ping the route, says destination host unreachable. When i ipconfig, says media disconnected. Downloaded drivers and installed with no avail...

This is on XP machine...
 
If you cannot connect - you won't be able to ping.

Check the security on the router - do you settings match?

can you please elaborate carudden? what security are you referring to! My WPA key is entered correctly & it matched the routers one....

BTW, at some stage, it did connect for about 5secs, then disconnected itself. This was after rebooting PC...
 
Maybe your access point is configured with only CERTAIN MAC adresses able to access your AP. Im almost quite sure its coz of a security issue that u cant access it, make sure your IP is in the same RANGE as the AP's.
 
Something to share...

I've moved the router very close to the XP PC, & everything works fine. Now this is confusing to me. Why would it show all bars (full strength) if there's some interference problems? This doesn't make sense...

Q: Can i connect two PCs in a ad-hoc with the following....

PC1 is connected to the router using Ethernet/LAN adapter (doesn't have wireless card)
PC2 is can only connect using wireless dongle, how can it communicate with the other PC?
 
Getting more confusing!...

When i managed to connect, the WAP/WEP was disabled. Enabling it takes me back to the same problems... This leaves me with two conditions....

1. When the router is in the room away from XP PC (with some minor walls interference), i couldn't connect regardless of the security, whilst the strength remains full
2. When i bring the router closer to the XP PC, still getting the same full strength, i can only connect when the WPA/WEP is disabled.

Any ideas?
 
1) Your signal back is bad. Its a 2 way conversation, and you're only seeing the 1 way as being good.

2) Your WEP/WPA settings are wrong. Check your passkey. Some routers require the passkey in Hex.
 
if you are sure you are connected and security settings ok, are you sure you have your ip addressing up to scratch ?
 
i've installed a wireless dongle instead. Now connected with no problems...
