Ok so anyways i am moving into a new place, small place with 2 bedrooms.

Now i play online games so i am wondering if i setup a wireless setup will the signal be strong enough to have a good 15-20ms ping or will it be worse?

I know wireless is not ideal for gaming but the signal should be really strong due to the small space.

Also can someone recommend a good wireless router i am thinking of something from billion.

Wireless as 3g, Wimax ? or wireless as connected to your adsl router through wireless ?

If the internet is wireless your latency wont be good.

If you running adsl and connecting through wireless you normally add an extra 2ms to ping the router, so it wont be bad as long as you have good signal strength.

Routers are basically all the same nowadays, avoid the Mega 105 from Telkom as the wireless doesnt work.

That's odd, my ping stayed >0 even at a long distance which equaled a weak signal. I only experienced slower speeds because of distance.

Now that ain't right, unless you mean they follow the basic principal of a router. Check CNet's reviews and you can see that the routers reviewed are different between brands.

@killadoob, how much are you willing to spend? You could go a 802.11G setup(cheap, short range, speeds of up to 54mbps) or a 802.11N setup (not that cheap, long range, speeds of up to 300mbps). Recommend brands: D-Link, Linksys and Belkin. Billion is not on my list because of what I experienced on MWeb's W40 router.

I think Killa has a DSL line and that he will be using wireless to connect a second PC to the router.

The one thing I have experienced with Wireless Routers and gaming is packet loss. Stable but every so often a few packets of data go walkies and a few of those times it gets me killed. When I played in the UK I had a wirless connection to the router and every few minutes I would spike to 500ms for 2 - 3 seconds then it came back to normal. A friend in Scotland had the same issue.

So check that out as well.

My friend had wireless in his home and his ping stays low but he gets Disconnected from the cod servers way too often.

Ok than for the info so could i for instance have my gaming pc connected to the router via a wire and have the other pc's running off wireless?

as long as you have a good router and cards... otherwise you get a dropped connection on heavy data use.. like copying a dvd image.. and xbox's dont like wireless so much..

maybe homeplug 1000

also moving in 2 weeks so in the same boat

I connect wirelessly to my brother-inlaw's place, about 300m, we get nice ping speeds and no problems when networking games. (we only run a 11mb with senoa's) Also i can get 2ms response time on any of my internal devices/pc's on my AP for the house (my AP sits in my ceiling also senao but a 54mbs)

I get 2ms through wireless to a telkom router, must be the router then. I meant most routers do the same thing, of course you get what you pay for but they all mostly good.

Like mentioned above another problem with wireless is getting dropped/disconnected when doing large data transfers, I use to get disconnected when running torrents for an hour or so, but this could also be with the router(quality of it).

I think it's more likely the quality of the router because I'm able to shift gigs through my network wirelessly without drops and stay connected to the web as long as my ADSL up and running.

I got a billion 7300gra, any good?

I hope so will be setting it up this weekend, is it easy to setup this stuff?

I hope it is, because the Billion I'm currently using just looks like a grey paintjob version of the 7300GRA and it's pretty unreliable. Just waiting for the Belkin N+ ADSL router I ordered from eXpansys to arrive :).

Dude, its cool for your gaming box to be wired, wireless doesnt work well.
I have two pc's and a laptop connecting vis the wireless in my house and those are all fine. The bugger is my gaming box which is also connecting via the wireless and I always hit those massive lag spikes when I bump into you... its why you always kill me mmmkay? :p

But seriously Im running a modded linksys wireless unit which is 3 meters from my pc and Im getting that loss still.

If only I had put conduit into the walls when I built the place!!!

It would be easier if you invited me round for beer and to set it up, but seeing as how im in EL you can always xfire me and I will take you though it if you need help.
