Hi
I Live in Oudtshoorn. Our exchange do not have ADSL at the moment, neither are there any wireless ISP servicing our town. I am desperately trying to find any information on building my own Wireless ISP. Could anyone forward any information regarding the setup of it ?

Thanks

Of course people live there man - I drove through there just a few weeks ago and saw lots of them. One of them sold me an ostrich egg.
I knew peole lived there - but they have computers?! That must mean that they have ELECTRICITY ... let's all go there!

the Oudtshoorn exchange DOES have ADSL at the moment. You have either:
1. Been living in a cave, or
2. Are lying like a bastard

And you'll also need a little thing called a VANS license. Good luck getting one of those - they don't issue them anymore.

very nice and friendly replies people get when they come with their problems to MyADSL. Lying bastards that live in caves just because they thaught they cant get ADSL in oudtshoorn... oh well whatever, it just seemed like a innocent question to me.

Anyone else enjoy kranz kuchen by any chance... that lovely round german cacke? (kranz means crown im german, ie. the roundness)

No, we don't have ADSL on our exchange. Have checked it with Telkom.

Wrt the VANS license: you might have some luck with the ISP who's assisting Knysna with their municipal wifi efforts (UniNet - read article here about legality including the journalist's own comments further down).

They might already be talking to the Oudtshoorn municipality. If not, some gentle encouragement to your town elders might just do the trick to nudge them in the right direction... that is, if said nudge is delivered at a propitious time - most likely sometime between second morning tea and mid-day siesta...

I think this is your best route - better than raising your own standard against the Telkom juggernaut...

No wonder some newbie’s post on MYADSL only till they get their problem solved and then leave, never to return. Why would you want to stay if you have question and get idiot (or school'ies with to much time on their hands) answers like the above.

oh poo

ok so i had a bad day - sue me.

Where exactly in Oudtshoorn do you live where the exchange is allegedly not ADSL enabled yet. Who did you speak to at Telkom? Knysna's guys are not coming to Oudtshoorn, they have their hands full there, getting ip conflicts like mad and can't keep up with sorting that out.

What about getting a satellite feed from someone (dunno who, Sentech I think still offers this) and then broadcasting via wireless from your house or business. I think www.poynting.co.za might be the guys to look into. Otherwise contact someone like Iburst or Sentech and see, maybe you can become a reseller or something and maybe they will make the investment in the area. All of this just guessing though, its up to you to do all the research. :)

Wonder if anyone else will have suggestions as good as mine :P or if they'll just look to rip my apart ;)

Thanks a lot. Will look into that option. Of course I am looking into the option of wireless Intrenet for myself, but seeing that it is too expensive, I am trying to look for an option where I can involve more internet users from my own community. Some of the guys on this site seem so clever, they are actually stupid. Can't see the broad spectrum. Thanks once again.

grahamjh -

as a project get to know the guys at the local municipality who deal with municipal communications - ask them to look at getting a private telecommunications network licence which will allow them to get their own bandwidth and some frequency spectrum + subcontract for the installation of their own facilities...all of whichwill make it easier for you to get a decent connection

a lot of smaller municialities are doing this in the western cape

Hi There,

The ADSL Exchange in oudtshoorn is just for 272 279 numbers, the reason being, the exchange only has a 4km radius from the Postoffice (which is in the middle of the town) for ADSL thus 274 numbers can't use the exchange as all 274 numbers are more that 4km away from the postoffice. I live on the outskirts of town, 4.2km radius, and Telkom tell me that we'll have problems, their not going to install an ADSL line.

I do have some good news - RPC Data from george is offering an Broadband wireless service in Oudtshoorn (not using any telkom infrastructure) from April. Price will be around R350+VAT with no Capping. Guess you will need some hardware. If you'd like, I can email you the message from RPC Data

Regards,
