Hi,

I've got a Laptop and two desktops that I'd like to connect via wireless LAN. Knowing absolutely nothing whatsoever on the subject, where would be a good place for me to start reading up?

The Laptop has an integrated WLAN thingie, so can I for example just buy two cheapo USB adaptors for the desktops? (eg. http://www.jump.co.za/Products/Product.asp?ProductCode=PR120326) Would that work?

Any help muchos appreciated

Hi fewl

Unfortunately you can't just buy the usb adaptors, you also need an Access Point, because wireless adaptors can only communicate in pairs without it.

The access point performs the same function as a switch normally would, it's just wireless ;)

Oh yes, if one of the machines is going to be close to the access point you can plug it into the Access point with a UTP cable...

Most Access points come with 1 UTP/WAN port, if you go for a wireless router it'll probably have 4 UTP ports and 1 WAN port. The WAN port plugs into your ADSL modem allowing all connected devices access to the internet.

PM me if you need some advice/prices on decent equipment.

yes you can get two USB dongles and run them in adhoc mode.

good place to start reading... um http://www.google.com

Skydog, if you count, there are three PCs he wants to connect and for that Ad-Hoc won't do.

If this is possible it must be a new feature of wireless devices because i've never seen more than 2 devices in ad hoc mode communicating with each other.

I'm betting the author of that article smoked a bit too much crack :p

I am on a wireless mesh consisting of about 20 Wireless Routers, all working nicely together in Ad-Hoc mode.

I have also personally had a 5 system Ad-Hoc mode wifi network running in the past.

interresting... :o

Guess I just never bothered playing around with ad-hoc mode seeing as I had an AP,

you can run them in ad-hoc mode, they need to be in range of each (90-100m).

Infrastructure mode, you'll need a wap, much better set-up than adhoc.

ryder you sure that is a mesh topology your on, damn thats alot of redundancy, what type of data you storing.................curios!!!!

Clearly you have not pushed wifi to its limits ;)
have a look at their setup on http://www.jawug.za.net

Yes we all know ad hoc is not as great as infrastruture mode but sometime you have to do what you have to do.

Without doubt, never tried it personally, will have a good browse over the link you have provided.
