I did a vodacom upgrade a couple of weeks ago and decided to take a Dell laptop with built in wireless manager.."DELL wireless manager"

On surfing the net..i notice that each time after i have surfed the net...my wireless manager is registering that i have used 4 gig of information. Impossible just surfing on various web pages..and not more than 20 min.

Resetting the usage i get excessive data used every time.
The billing information when queried is showing just that.

Not sure if the computers internet connection is been hacked and utilized every time or there is a error in the software.

Any help and pointers would be appreciated.

Install something like Netlimiter or DuMeter and see what they have to say about your traffic usage.

Mine did exactly the same yesterday and I was on for about the same time.....1 min it still showed 10mb and the next it was 4.3GB!

What happened darkevil?

The problem looks like a common one with all types of "Upgrades" which includes phones, modems and Laptops. As I see it is that these Vodacom Franchises receive bulk stock where the Phone Rom/firmware,Modem Firmware and Laptop OS (Operating Systems) are not updated to spec, then we consumers have to pay via large data downloads to update our products. The solution as I see it is to sign your OBF (Out of Box Failure) form on condition that the Franchise sends the Phone, modem and Laptop for ALL UPDATES BEFORE TAKING DELIVERY.
Just my 2cents worth.

That unfortunately is a Microsoft and hardware manufacturer issue. Vodacom can not be held responsible if Microsoft wants to upload a couple of 100 megs @ a time of updates to your computer.

That will be a huge problem , man power, as in updating every phone with latest FW physically will be most time consuming not to mention to keep up to date with all the latest releases/bugfixes.

Like nokia for example releasing a phone and firmware almost every 6 months same goes for Iphone.

Thanks

Ok, but the modem is built into the laptop and I disabled the windows auto updates and mcafee updates......

Is it even at all possible to download 4.3 gig in 10 minutes via 3g?

Hello Margriet. If you are on contract and with VSP, then please PM me your 3G cell, ID number (authentication purposes) and you email and I will send you itemized billing for data usage. Please stipulate in which month this occured.

Regards:
OC

Thanks OC but I did a check on my data usage with VC now and luckily that doesn't reflect.....only 17mb which I know of......oh this happened monday evening.

Since then I have also changed to a different download manager as I was suspecting it had something to do the the other one.

Great stuff. Glad. PLEASE NOTE: VODACOM IS IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR "NEAR FATAL HEART ATTACK DUE TO INCORRECT DATA USAGE REFLECTING ON 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE. NOR SHALL WE BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ASSOCIATED HOSPITAL COSTS DUE THE THE BEFORE MENTIONED EVENT/S" :p:D

I have the same problem at the moment with excessive usage billed by Vodacom. In one month more than 22GB's. The total for that month is almost R28k due to out of bundle charges @R1.20/MB:mad: I do not dowload videos etc and mostly only music and general surfing. No online games either. I installed Mallware bytes and this found 3 Trojans. Could this have made the downloads without me knowing?

Spyware does funny things to your pc. Did you escalate or query your bill?

Just a friendly note and prob a bi offtopic:

Automatic updates are there for a reson. Dont just go and disble them. If have the know how you can set it to let you know when updates are available and then let you choose which updates to download. For instance you can download only 'critical updates' and in doing so save yourself a couple of megs.
All new laptops/pcs will have a backlog on the updates the first time you go online. Its best to get some extra cap when you purchase it so that you can get your machine up to date. After that the updates are mostly minor and wont eat into you monthly cap too much.
Updates are not only too improve your OS but also to keep it compatible with other developement in the market. Not to mention security!

And yes, virus/trojan/malware infections can mess with your usage. Spare yourelf the headache. Do your updates. :)

I did query the bill but was not much use as the lady from Vodacom said that they do not keep a record of sites but only data volume downloaded. This I already have on the invoice.

I would like to see what the feedback was that was given to you. Can you please pm me your 3G number?
