Wireless Router: 54 or 108 mbps

Hi all,

Further to my discussion here:

I have a ADSL Mega 200VWR Telkom wireless router, capable of 54 Mbps wireless.

I would like to connect the following equipment:
1. One desktop pc via cat5 to the router.
2. One wireless AP (extender) via cat5 to downstairs area.
3. Two notebooks connecting wireless to the AP downstairs via wireless cards.

- Will I benefit by getting an AP and 2 PCMCIA network cards capable of 108, if the router wireless is only 54? Or does it depend then on the AP wireless speed (in this case 108) and not the router speed (in this case 54)?

- Is there a real noticeable difference in speed while surfing between 54 and 108 equipment? For example downloads at 8 MBps compared to say 30 MBps?

i remember reading somewhere that EVERY wireless component of your network needs to be 108 for the wireless to run at 108. there's also talk that those 108 devices need to be from the same manufacturer to function properly at 108.

as for your second question, the fastest commercial internet speed in seff afrika is, what, 7.2mbps from hsdpa and 8mbps soon from telkom? 8mbps = 1MBps so whether you're using 54 or 108 mbps the internet surfing experience will be the same. the only time when the speed will matter will be when you're transferring large files between computers on your network, and when you need to do that often you'll quickly realise how crappy wireless is and lay down some cables. yes i'm speaking from experience :p

another thing to remember is that although the max theoretical throughput may be 54mbps, in the real world i only get about 2MBps from my wireless network at home, which is about 16mbps. so i imagine 108 will be closer to 32mbps. damn these marketing guys are smart hey :o
 
108 is not a ratified speed. It's basically marketing bull**** that the manufactures come with to sell their product over the next one. Mainly the Moms and Pops units come with this though, the better, proper wireless APs are normal speeds (54 and 11).
 
Thanks for the replies guys, agreed, might as well buy a 11 Mbps router/extender/datacard everything. The main usage for the wireless solution is surfing the net wirelessly , right? DSL 384 Kbps line works just fine for me (non-gamer).
 
You probably can't buy those anymore. Just get a plain old 54 router/ap/everything.

If you're buying a new wireless card AND new router/ap, then look at the 802.11n stuff, although not yet ratified but very very soon will be.
 
Thanks, so you are saying it would be an investment for the future buying 108 now, not just a total waste of money?
 
as someone said earlier, for 108 to work properly you need all the cards and APs to be from the same manufacturer. So either buy the tried and tested 802.11g or take a chance on 802.11n but stay away from the 108 stuff.

Look at the end of the day, if your card is netgear and your AP is netgear then run 108 by all means.
 
Apologies for my ignorance and constant questions.

But I thought 802.11n = 108 Mbps? and 802.11g = 54 Mbps?
 
no 802.11n = up to 300 mbps but you wont get that

Also, if 802.11g max bitrate is 54 Mbit/s, then the 108 Mbit/s stuff cannot be 802.11g.

"IEEE 802.11n is an upcoming amendment to the IEEE 802.11-2007 wireless networking standard to improve network throughput over previous standards, such as 802.11b and 802.11g, with a significant increase in the maximum raw, OSI physical layer (PHY) data rate from 54 Mbit/s to a maximum of 600 Mbit/s"

So 108 Mbit/s should be 802.11n?
 
My bad, 108 Mbit/s = Super G.

"Other vendors have marketed Super G products as 108G Technology, 108Mbit/s 802.11g, and Xtreme G. Conclusion: As Hilton stated, I'd rather go with the trusted normal 802.11g (max 54 Mbit/s) stuff.

i've been using a dlink super g access point over a year now.. Haven't had any interoperability issues.. Pretty stable.
