Hi

Hoping someone else has had this issue and can help out.

I am attempting to VPN (through Cisco VPN) into work from home. I have tried from different locations and all seem to work (ADSL and 3G), but when I try to VPN from home via my wireless ADSL (Mecer Wireless ADSL2+ router) router, it looks appears to connect but I cannot access anything on the work network.

I'm guessing that there is a setting on the modem that needs to change as this is the only variable in the connection, but I'm not sure what I can or should change.

Anyone experience this or have any useful suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Normally ADSL routers have this thing called VPN pass-through. Perhaps that is something to look for?

Also, I wonder if the IP range that you use at home and at work are not the same where they should be different IP ranges.

Of course, this is from my limited personal experience with VPN's, but be free to check out these things.

I'd guess that it's simply the routing table at your home that is faulty - which also explains werner & nic777's posts.

You can run 'ipconfig print -4' in Win7 to print out the TCP/IPv4 routing table.

Is your VPN able to connect?

Sounds like the interface itself might be up but the routing table not adjusted accordingly?
Adding the route over the vpn interface should sort out the issue.

What type of vpn is this? l2tp/IPSec?

If you need just your home PC/laptop to reach work why not create the vpn interface
directly on your pc/laptop?

The new connection wizard allows you to connect to a network at my workplace i.e. a vpn.

This should be much easier if you don't feel comfortable tinkering with your router's
routing table.

Thanks for the replies- I'll check my home IP range this evening (although I'm fairly certain its a 192.168.x.x and works internal addresses all start with 172.20.x.x) when I get home. When you refer to the work IP range is this the external VPN server IP? I'm not connecting to a specific machine (RDP style), just connecting to the work network and using my local machine's Outlook to get mail and access network shares.

I have had multiple issues similar to what you are experiencing. Have tried everything, 3G dongle, changing routers, the works. But no luck. Eventually got fed up and got rid of it. I'm not much help, but you're not alone. Good luck

the ip ranges are the internal ranges, not really concerned about the external ip you connect to.

as a test, connect to vpn from somewhere where it works well.
then do start/run/cmd.exe
route print > working.txt

then connect to vpn from where it does not work (your home)
and do
start/run/cmd.exe
route print > notwork.txt

compare the two txt file, or post them here for analysis

this wont fix it by itself, and may not even tell us what is wrong, but will be able to eliminate one of the main causes

VPN pass-through is the first place that i will look. I had routers that simply dont work with the cisco vpn client. Netgear linksys and cisco routers is the only ones i use now for all my clients. I also had problems with the default ip's on the routers, if there are multiple vpn's connected the vpn connects and then drops now i change the default ip's of the routers
