Hi

I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router. I have setup a MAC access list and have also enable WPA-PSK Security Encryption. I have also changed the admin password.

Is there anything more I can do to secure this wireless router from wireless hijackers or have I done all that is possible (short of switching off). I know its probably still possible to hack it, but as long as I have done all that I can, I am happy.

TIA.

Sounds about right.
You could also hide the router's broadcast name.

good job, just make sure you have a strong WPA key
if you really paranoid check for latest firmware
not broadcasting SSID will not really help much but i guess better then nothing

Well the first time when I wanted to connect to my Router after setting everything up then I had to enter the SSID and also the WPA key. If i just entered the WPA key then it wouldnt allow me access....

Here's one for you:

kT8Vs1`,l~ct{!@rhTb6z,3VC!PseLwK)*xv1BGbKe351(}]nifFkJ-*mIk-eBO

This will prolly keep them out.... :p :p

Glad to see there isn't a " in that key - one wireless I've worked on cut the key off at the " - just click generate again if it throws out a key with a "

Using router in bridged mode

Anyway advice how to secure my PC ....?

Only hassle with using WEP/WPA keys are each time you change the routers keys you have to change all the clients! (Not sure about WPA as I've only used WEP).

Just using MAC address filtering should be fine though your network will appear to be "open" - though it's not. It is possible to fake MAC addresses but from what I know it will be a hard job and requires a network card that can be reprogrammed.

Hiding SSID's are useless - Netstumbler finds them even if "hidden".

So, yes the best is 1. use a WEP/WPA key, 2. use MAC address filtering and 3. Hide the SSID. But it may not be much more secure using all three vs just 1 or 2.

So it all depend on your level of paranoia ...

NO Mac filtering it is fairly useless and will only stop your neigbour from accidentally connecting to your wifi.

the problem with NOT having any encryption on is that it allows malicious people to sniff packets and get user names and passwords. and all the content of your emails and web browsing and basically any other data that is going across that link.

What is so difficult about changing 2,3 even 10 WPA passphases every 6 months... but then if you have a strong one you will not have to change it unless the passphase gets out.

yip depends on how paranoid you are ;)
