Wireless - the cable of the future?

"If you want it stable, go with cable." :D

Here's hoping that sometime in the future the same can be said for wireless. ;)
 
I think that both wired and wireless networks have their place and application.

Look at the various WUGs around, something like that would just not be feasible with cable. Our network at work is a mixture of wired and wireless, depending on the situation.

Wireless is great, look at the networks we WUGs have built over that past few years, networks covering cities. The amount we spent on Wireless wouldn't even come close to the equivelant of a cable network. Thing is just wireless networks has its limitations, as a backbone link I would say you are good for a average of 20mbps but when it comes to sector antennas (point to multipoint links) the more users connect the weaker the performance becomes.

So yea I would say each has its own place.
 
I had a talk with an engineering friend of mine about wireless vs cable - specifically fibre optic. He made an excellent point that wireless is the future - the very, very, very distant future.

The way I understand it is that wireless uses radio waves; light uses radio waves. But the problem with current wireless technology is that it's "all over the show" instead of directed from point-to-point - something which fibre/cable is capable of doing beautifully.

One day wireless will surpass wired technology, but not for a very long time - and from what I can tell, probably not even in our life times. So, give me that fibre!
 
Lycanthrope, you are spot on, that's why more people carry wired phones with them instead of these wireless cellular nonsense.

I chucked my wireless network at home. Was tired of the slow speeds, poor signals and insecure structure. All my rooms at home now are wired and I can plug in from anywhere and enjoy Gigabit speeds! :)

I still plan to join the WUG though. ;)
 
To connect to Wug wireless is perfect.
For paid internet i`m holding thumbs for fibre to the home.

It's called the WRT54 and it is made my Linksys.... nuff said.
 
What ever happened to that rumor about ESKOM making internet connections at more than 20mbps trough their electrical lines. They have the infrastructure all they need is to add the equipment to route the data in the right directions? Will work out much cheaper and faster than "NeoTells" entry.
