Wireless - the cable of the future?

What ever happened to that rumor about ESKOM making internet connections at more than 20mbps trough their electrical lines. They have the infrastructure all they need is to add the equipment to route the data in the right directions? Will work out much cheaper and faster than "NeoTells" entry.

As it turns out, Broadband over power lines is pretty much vapour ware. There are very few places in the world where it is being actually used, but lots of places are "trialling it".

Just a question for the scientific part of the community.

when they use uranium to send a steady focused "beam" of particles in a pointed direction... is it possible to do this with none lethal/(bad to humans) particles to be projected in a sequence, of machine code in lets say 1bit=1atom to form packets.

I don't know much of atoms,radio waves and the whole ding dong on it but is it possible to send atoms long distance like this in a structured way safely because they don't brake up like radio waves or did I just say some thing stupid and that a radio wave actually is what a described?

I just saw this thing on discovery channel where they sent a steady burst of atoms trough a gold leaf to prove that a atom's core can bounce back every now and then against each other. So basically does a radio wave consist out of atoms it self or is it the field around the atoms bouncing from one to a other or is it the atom it self moving from point a-b?

Haha if I just said idiotic things feel free to point them out and enlighten me I never did science :)

Its still very finicky. Tried it the other day and it was all over the place. Two plugs in the same room couldn't see each other, yet, across the house was fine. We had 4 electricians in the house and all the cableing, and phases were perfect.

Ended up setting up wireless around the house for the client.

But for speed and latancy.. at this point I have to agree that untill radio waves somehow start reaching the speed of light, Fibre optic is going to be the way to go. If only we could get rid of telkom and get some decent company in place who is prepared to do proper maintainence on the cables. Which is the only reason I see wireless working very well in SA, Because the owner will maintain it himself

Its all pretty safe unti lyou actually collide particles against each other. So in a straight line you wouldn't have a problem at all.

The catch is that the power required to get atoms to reach this speeds is just huge, never mind the hardware required. Now even when this is done, you are only getting to 99% of the speed of light, so Fibre optic, is still faster
 
true but the equipment can't convert at the speed of light so :D and also particles colliding, I'm not sure on this but will only go boom if you hit one with a slower moving one splitting it?

Any ways... I was wondering if they could use it as backbone inland? Sending the atoms in straight lines passing mostly trough air and bad weather( but they can send duplicated streams to cut out the data loss. Will be like having a semi wireless "fiber opticlike" beam in the air passing fast trough any thing from point A-B.

I'm not sure on the energy or equipment needed or distance a atom get propelled and projected at but... The could have rings like the "new trains"

The rings are the accelerators each equipped with solar energy and every 100th one with a wind turbine nearby giving extra juice, or one could have this in a smaller scale in tiny tubes to homes and what not :D but I don't see this being energy cost or in any way efficient with today's teck.

I'm not that well informed about particle acceleration but is it possible to have some form of a continues pull on the atoms trough the rings like the "new trains idea on discovery channel that pulls a train trough rings instead of a track and the rings are magnetically generated pulling them along, not that you can move the atoms like this?

But koebergs power is pretty much atoms being bombarded by uranium spewing out atoms almost never ending like a machine gun cooking water and spinning the turbines.

Things only go boom with the right conditions. However any atoms in the way will get split or moved out the way by the high moving atoms, Which will make the collision area radioactive. Since they would be moving in air, these collisions would be taking place continually all the way along the line.

Which is why something like the LHC is done under complete vacuum. To get the atoms to move, you also need to use magnets.. MASSIVE magnets and these cost millions. Add all these costs together, and Fibre optic is cheaper.

Take the LHC as well. They use fibre optic connections between all the magnets, detectors. Granted the equipement cant process at light speed. But the fact that signal is recieved almost right away, means it can start to process at least 5 seconds before a radio signal is even transmitted in the first place. Again add all this up, and laser and fibre optic is just cheaper. (at least on these scales, for us plebs at home, its a different story)

EDIT: What might work in the future is a concentrated laser beam. If you could be certain of the start and end points, you could use the laser beam to transmit data across large areas. Most practical use though would be in space. Say from here to Mars. If a transmitter and reciever were put into orbit so that a beam could be passed between the two, One would be able to use these to communicate with only a 2 min time lag, where radio waves would be 15min +

I have read theories on vacuums and true vacuums. The vacuums of our space/ matter consist out of matter in the smallest sense beyond atom level :)

Was a very interesting read and how every thing is strung together also explaining the core core part of a atom is out most detail and also how the jumps happen in the fields. The entire universe is matter even vacuums and Dark matter is where true vacuums are found. Dark vacuums as it is now known in that theory does not destroy matter but brakes it down to the smallest point because true matter can never really be destroyed only made obsolete frozen in time if its separated from other matter string it together.

Well by the laws of physics.. nothing can really be destroyed as much as transfered around from one energy to another, or one form of matter to another. Even when the atom is split its not destoryed, its just broken up into smaller particles like quarks.

Dont think it will work at all as a form of communication in the very near future though. With regards to Wireless, I think its great when using short distances, but really bad when we start going over anything 50km's plus.

With the wireless in SA there is also the problem of bad regulation and the problems it can cause for the SKA. Many people think ICASA is just being a pain in the rear with many things and while I dont deny that they are slow, there are implications of using unlicensed frequencies, But I seriously doubt a single person here gives a damn about that unfortunately
