I'm supposed to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed.

What should I expect? (pls dont tell me to google!)

Every body is different. I swelled up like a birthday balloon and cried like a little girl on the first night because they hadnt given me anything stronger than paracetamol for the pain (but that's ok, because I am a little girl). On the other hand I have known people to be pain free (relatively) within 24hrs with minor swelling.

Are you going under general anesthetic?

Here's what to expect - coming from someone who had all 4 theirs removed at the same time:
- General anestethic
- An operation of a few minutes
- Maximum half-day hospital stay

If you book in early, you can be out before noon.

Fairly simple.

Sore mouth,
swelling,
Eating liquids,
they do offer this "infra red laser" treatment which is meant to help the pain and reduce swelling - dunno if it helps or not.
lekker feeling after anasthetic wares off
sore mouth

just make sure to use a good dis infectant mouth wash. You dont want that **** getting infected

Yeah corsodyl or andolex C is normally sufficient.

Have some ice packs on standby. Also have some liquid food ready (something hot like soup might hurt...). I had mine done under conscious sedation, pretty painful once the drugs ware off. Luckily you'll get plenty of hardcore painkillers.

Take time off and WEAR YOUR BUNNY EARS (the head wrap thing with the ice packs)!!! People get self-conscious and don't wear them and that's why their faces blow up.

Had 4 removed under local in doctors room, back at work 36 hours,
Everyone reacts differently

Ah, this is something I've always feared. Lucky for me, I don't have wisdom teeth at the top of my mouth, only at the bottom. Back when I was in primary school, I had one tooth come out over another, and the only way to fix it was with braces, but for that to work we needed space in my mouth so they had to pull 4 normal teeth. This left a lot of open space on my lower jaw, so my wisdom teeth came out without complications. :D

There's still a chance I'll need to have them removed if something goes wrong, but according to the orthodontist that chance is very small.

Best of luck to you, though. I've heard some horror stories about wisdom teeth removal, so ever since I was a little kid it was something that was constantly on my mind and of which I was horrendously afraid.

Depends on the individual, the surgeon/dentist and severity of your teeth. I had two heavily impacted teeth (out of 4) the guy had to break apart but he was good. I had slight swelling on the one side but was munching on biltong when the surgeon called me the next day wrt my progress, he was hosing himself when I told him I'm munching on biltong :D

Edit: If you are in the Durban area I can highly recommend

I still curse my parents after my removal.

Got all 4 removed also under general. Jaw was very stiff. But here is the kicker.

I "had" to drink 2 painkillers every 6 hours, but because my mother is a pharmacist who is over protective and "feared" I'd get addicted to them she only gave me 1 every 12 hours....

My 4 wisdoms were a non-issue. Zero pain at any point. Just follow the instructions for your meds and ice packs and you'll be fine. Removing bits of food from the holes left behind was the only nuisance, but that doesn't last long.

You'll only have a miserable time if you don't do what you're told, your wisdoms are extremely difficult to extract, the facility sucks, you don't go under or a maxillofacial surgeon doesn't perform the procedure.

I was fine and had minimal pain. Maybe because I misread the label on the painkillers which said to take two four times a day... I took two every four hours :o

Thanx for the advice guys! Will try to keep a positive attitude & some extra painkillers stashed away somewhere!
I'm not looking forward to a week without a delicious steak :(

Only a week? It might be more than that, since your gums will remain a bit tender. So its probably soup and bread without crusts for a while. And since you will be taking anti-biotics, no wine, etc for the duration. Good luck, mine were taken out when I was 20 but it was so long ago I have forgotten. I was swollen up for 2-3 days and it got better after that
