Chances are lower with impacted teeth. Depends on the severity. Bad ones get broken up and drilled out, in which case you probably won't get them afterwards.

Most important factor is to just get it over with ASAP. The longer you leave it, the higher the likelihood of forking out more cash, more dentist trips, more pain in the future due to problems related with wisdoms.

Why are you guys going to surgeons though? I went to the Dentist

Because why not? Your chances of a great procedure improve tremendously when a maxillofacial surgeon is doing it.

I met my wife (1985) a couple of days after I had my wisdom teeth taken out.
My point, it is possible that you look more attractive to the opposite sex when your face is all blown up from the swelling.

Jokes aside, actually above is a true story, my operation was all four teeth, hospital for half a day, general anaesthetic, lots of blood when you wake up with several days or weeks of swelling.

Not so much as a drop of blood came out my mouth. I had all 4 wisdoms removed - only one site had stitches. I was very impressed with everyone involved with my procedure.

Because a maxillo is a specialist and if the med aid is paying for it then why not. Also you in a hospital setting so should you flat line from the anaesthetics you can be revived quickly and wont .... die

also you can be asured that any maxillofacial is experienced enough to handle this type of procedure, an unexperienced dentist might break the crown of then you going to have a serious problem

Update: got them removed last night+was discharged at 9pm! 1st nite was not so bad, but my lips are bruised!I think I was accidentally poked 3times when they were stitching me! My cheeks are puffy inside

painkilers are lifesavers! I got andolex + corsodyl as well. Tried to brush my teeth bit its useless! Thinking of using a kiddies brush :D so far I've only had Mageu + I'm starving!

Hey kiddies brush is fine. Go for it. And be sure to keep on using the corsodyl/andolex mouthwash as it will improve your chances of not developing further complications..

Shame, just heard from my brother who was at the dentist this week. He's going to have to get his wisdom teeth removed, and due to the fact that his are in particularly bad shape the entire procedure is going to cost him R18k. Feel bad for him, he's busy saving up for a new car and this will likely set him back four or five months.

medical aid doesnt pay for this ?

shame man, hope it goes well. Did they tell him why his were in bad shape ?

I can't count on one hand the instances insurance has saved my hide. Most important monthly expense imo. On a related note, my household has literally (and legitimately) received over a million rand from insurance over the last few years. Goose would have been cooked otherwise.

as long as you got the right stuff. I always advise people away from discovery health, because they dont pay for when you needed. Most of us can afford a doctor's consult fee, its the theatre time we cant and need med aid.

Nah, he went off my parents' medical aid when he turned 20 in March. He's been shopping around for a new medical aid, but he's yet to find an affordable one. He's still pretty young and to top it off, he's got epilepsy, so most places raise the price for that seeing as it needs to cover his medication as well.

But, as I told him, that's what you get for wanting to do things backwards. He's saving up for a new car, but he doesn't even have a medical aid yet. It's not as if he gets bad pay either. He brings in around 7K a month, which is excellent for a 20 year old with only matric to his name.

Not entirely sure what exactly the issue with his teeth are, but they're definitely going to have to cut as he's going to have to get it done in the theatre. Will probably find out the details when he gets home.

Eish, medical is very important especially if he epileptic. He does qualify to get epilim (if thats what he uses) from a state clinic, if he is willing to get it done. State clinics take a few minutes, its the hospitals that takes hours.

Hmmm, well as long as he has hospital cover for now he should be fine.

EDIT

make sure he tells the anaesthetist that he epileptic

My mom first took out general insurance when she was 19 and living alone in a flat. Before she even paid her first premium, her place was totally cleaned out. Insurance paid out in full. Her sister was cleaned out a few years later without insurance and it crippled her. She claimed it was unaffordable but she actually earned more than my mom. Insurance is just too important to not have, particularly in a country like ours.
