Wisdom teeth removal

Everyone is different from the sound of it, everyone talked me full of fear, ended up not even swelling at all (was constantly icing though) and apart from a little discomfort with the stitches, I didn't experience any pain (took all my meds)... Everyone says to avoid solid foods, but by the first evening I was so freaking hungry I chowed half a pizza, you just got to chew everything with the front half of your mouth:D

I ate a full large pizza the following evening, so I'll say we're similarly proficient at recovering from teeth removal. :p

Getting bits of food out the holes was incredibly annoying.

I was fine and had minimal pain. Maybe because I misread the label on the painkillers which said to take two four times a day... I took two every four hours :o

Which, if you stay awake for 16 hours... is roughly the same thing.

Mine was not a pleasant experience.

They were quite badly impacted as I waited forever to get them sorted hoping it would go away. In the end the doctors had to fracture a few of them to remove them.

I booked in bright and early and was out before the end of the day. My jaw was pretty badly swollen and bruised and I ate liquids for quite a while after (something like a month).

Mine seems to have been particularly bad and not at all normal. For most of my friends their recoveries were measured in days, not weeks and they didn't have the sort of bruising and swelling and pain that I did.

interesting thread,

out of curiosity, what is the cost of removing 1 wisdom tooth?

Do you know of the cheapest most effective place/way to remove one's wisdom teeth?
Not looking forward to a lot of pain either.

I still curse my parents after my removal.

Got all 4 removed also under general. Jaw was very stiff. But here is the kicker.

I "had" to drink 2 painkillers every 6 hours, but because my mother is a pharmacist who is over protective and "feared" I'd get addicted to them she only gave me 1 every 12 hours....

Lol a mother's paranoia overides her training ROFL.

Dude all I can say to you is this, when you discharged you going to have that sock thing around your head with ice in it for swelling. Dont take it off, keep it iced and on as long as possible.

Buy some heroin for about R60 on the streets. Inject it and use a hammer to remove your wisdoms. That should be cheap

@ Wrathex

Yes you dont need to remove your wisdoms if they not causing any trouble, just means your jaw is big enough to accomodate them, even if they havent fully pushed out of the gums

Had mine out last week Friday, was out with mates in the evening and up early on Saturday for the rugby. Even had a steak roll for lunch. Not much swelling, anti inflammatories help a lot. I only ever felt pain where the one was impacted and the gum had to be cut a fair amount behind the tooth, no pain whatsoever where the others were. Did take Stilpane for 3 days though which definitely helped where the impacted one was. Reckon I have an excellent dentist (all 4 pearlers came out beautifully) and I can't believe I was so scared beforehand. Best just man up and get it over and done with. Having it done under general is a walk in the park.

Some other points:

Rinse for a minute with Corsodyl/Andolex C after every meal.

Try not to fiddle with your tongue. The weird new gaps and stitches can beg for attention but just don't. :P

Check that solids don't get caught in the gums below the stitches. Rinsing well should get it out. Don't eat anything too fine like foods with sesame seeds, perhaps rice, etc. Try stick to soup for the first few days. Woolies butternut soup mmm.

I miss the chewing surface area the wisdoms gave, should be fine once I can properly use my rear teeth again (still conscious about the healing gums). You will have to eat like a horse for a while. :D

Ice cream and frozen yoghurt etc. are great, soothing and reduces swelling.

I was supposed to have mine removed in 2007! But have been delaying it, now I cant postpone anymore :(
I'm hoping mine will also be a *walk in the park*

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed years ago - around 1984 (and surprisingly I still am still wise ..;) )

I had them out on a Thursday, and Saturday I had a golf competition ... which I actually won! But only because my jaw was so sore I could't lift my head when making a shot. The halfway-house breakfast break was a laugh for my golfing buddies, because I had to suck up my scambled egss through a straw :o And bacon was a no-no

Wisdom teeth remove last year. All four in one go. They give me something to sleep though. No pain / swelling at all after the whole thing. The guy who did it was good.

I had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago, was in a ward with about 10 of us all going for the op on the same day (felt like cattle). I went home after and ate dinner (chicken, rice etc) without any issues.

very good advice. Anti-inflammatories you can use OTC would be Genpayne (myprodol generic) or tensopyn effervescent if you have diffuculty swallowing. Obviously you should know what you allergic ect

Mine are for sale - R 50,00 each or all for R 120,00

Well firstly medical aid (or hospital plan in my case) only seems to pay if done at a surgery.

Secondly general anaesthetic, I would think...

My dentist did it, not a surgeon.

I met my wife (1985) a couple of days after I had my wisdom teeth taken out.
My point, it is possible that you look more attractive to the opposite sex when your face is all blown up from the swelling.

Jokes aside, actually above is a true story, my operation was all four teeth, hospital for half a day, general anaesthetic, lots of blood when you wake up with several days or weeks of swelling.
