So I have a cavity in one of my top wisdom teeth....site of the cavity is rather "awkward", hence extraction... Dentist put me on a course of antibiotics and anti inflammatories, seeing a maxillo surgeon on Monday for consultation...-- the offending tooth's root runs way to close to my sinuses - hence my dentist kicking this up to maxillo level.....anyone have some insights into what I am walking into? Thanks / Danke / Enkosi

It depends on your age, under 30 is a walk in the park, can do it in the dentist chair, under 40 it'll need a week off work and a diet of yogi-sip, over that, anyone's guess.

Since I don't believe in evolution, I kept mine in spite of the maxillo-facial surgeon's warnings FUD of going blind etc. We have an agreement: I don't trouble them, and they don't trouble me.

Had my wisdom teeth extracted a couple of years ago.

Sounds like your situation is similar to mine - one of the three (yep, I only had 3 wisdom teeth...) also had a pesky root which made extraction tricky.
I chose to have the extraction for all 3 take place at the hospital under sedation [no way I was doing the chair].
Medical Aid paid except for the co-payment of R4000 (which I claimed back via Gap Cover a few weeks later).

NO pain at all, however did have some discomfort. Ate Ultra-Mel and Soup (no salt) and drank weak juice for a couple of days.
Worst part was the flipping stitches - they dissolve, but feels like you ate a ball of thread.

A colleague also had his wisdom teeth extracted but went the chair route (no complicated roots etc.) - was sooo unhappy when he heard I went the hospital route!

Have to mention:

* The wisdom teeth in my mouth turned in on the other teeth and started pushing forward - I loved those buggers till they started disliking me...
* I was 38 IRC when I went - took liberty and took sick-leave for a week or so
* Got pre-authorisation weeks ahead, in writing

That's extreme. Had all 4 wisdom teeth removed in the chair for around R400 each, wasn't bad at all.

I don't mind the dentist, but wasn't too keen on the idea of being manhandled in the chair.

I'm a big oke - kinda look like Shrek, so if there's a chance of getting hurt I hurt back.

The biggest reason for the hospital was 1 of the teeth pulled a Xenomorph move - it pushed roots up into my sinuses and started some shenanigans. So too complicated for a chair extration.
Tooth number 2 had to be cut out - it went all Dukes of Hazard and lodged itself against a molar.
Tooth number 3 was simple and straightforward.

Besides, it was painless and scored me few days off work.

Had mine done under full sleepy time with a co-pay in hospital, still went out that night, that said, the stiches were very annoying. The whole in hospital route came about form the local anesthetic stuff not working , they injected my mouth a few times, but could feel everything, so the dentist opted to send me to send me to a maxillio. The not working thing has been something my whole life, fillings are the worst :(

Don't do it in the dentist chair. Use the maxillo.
I had one wisdom tooth extracted by dentist at 18 years old. I was man down for days.
I had the other 3 taken out by the maxillo around 2 years later - I was on solids the same evening and I was up and about the next day.

It depends on how your wisdoms erupt.

Depends. What's your IQ ? Can you afford to have less wisdom ?

Jokes - had all 4 of mine done in the chair - straight back to work the next day.

Depends, I have three, two are still happy burried in the gum but the third started impacting another a few years back and I managed to get it taken out in a chair but it was a close thing. Those bastards have some wicked roots, google some images, a lot are hooked or clawed.

Take a week off

That is if you have the kind of job that isn't the type where when you take leave everything goes to **** and you have to deal with an enormous **** storm upon your return.

ok so co payment of R4700 -- will be a clinic event,.. having a consultation with the surgeon next Monday... going to see if I can use my MSA... have like four years of worth saved up. ...and as always, thanks all for the input.
