WISPs shaking up broadband space

I live on a farm in the western cape, tried GPRS/EDGE (Telkom doesn't do ADSL here) but the service was slow and unreliable.
Made the change to a local wisp after 2years of slow..
Current service is faster but more importantly, reliable.

A great undertaking would be to get all Wisps to detail their coverage and post it on Myadsl so that potential clients know whether they are covered or not and who covers them.

I used to be with Wireless Online about 2-3 years ago, for a year or more. I switched to DSL back then because of continuous linedrops and timeouts. Surfing, if not online gaming, was at times impossible.
I don't know how much has changed. WO for one is now advertising 1:1 contention ratio with their @Work product offering. Anybody here got any new experience to share?

there are many threads on myadsl contradicting this statement... none recently that I can recall though.

well certain WISPS have serious issues - that i can say ...
a certain known WISP has got a business model in the highveld - but down at the coast in KZN its a total other business model - 5x the speed , same price - but yet they are one and the same company.

I have got a client in the winelands of Stellenbosch that uses snowball.
We have found it to be comparable to the reliability of ADSL (90% optimal, 9% slow or interrupted access, 1% no access) , while having slightly slower speeds.
For this client it is wonderful as it is 50x more reliable than the GPRS he was using and 10 times cheaper than leased line.
What would help these guys a lot is if they were allowed to use wimax like they are currently using Wi-fi.
the second thing that would help is if they could buy international traffic from somewhere else than government (ie Telkom).

The Wisps have gotten expensive recently. It has always been high setup costs, but I've noticed recently that either the services are far more restricted or the price has gone up a lot.
