I would not say they are that bad, been with them for about 2 years now, never had any major problems, water in the little boxy that they put in the roof , that type of thing , yes it is slower during the day but then I have "home" option that they state will be slower during the day. Would I go for something faster? Yes but then I go through 30-40 gigs a month. I am not a gamer so latency does not bother me, main thing I know no matter how much I use, the price is set and that is what is important to me

with Telkom fixed line residential numbers dwindling most people that want adsl would have to fork out the analogue rental charge above the adsl charge and not actually use it.

"Most people"
Surely not, almost everyone I know has a home phone. I really don't think it's nearly most people, but rather a minority.

Do you really think most people getting ADSL don't have a home phone? :/ Maybe it's more than I think, but still not accurate to just include the analouge rental without any mention that if you have a home phone you don't pay that charge. Pretty bad from MyADSL imo, people reading that have no idea, even some posting on this forum...

btw, they shouldn't be charging for line rental as well as ADSL "rental", but what we want and what we pay are different things, especially when it comes to Telkom.

Everyone I know have cellphones and no home phone. Are you sure they all have and actually want a home phone and don't just have it / got it for internet? Sure once you have to fork out the money for it you will use it for cheaper calls but for everyone like us who use less than R20 pm for a cell it doesn't make sense to pay for it so we gave it up. Yeah I too think they shouldn't be charging ADSL rental but I would rather pay that than both.

If you take notice you will see that they are slowly increasing the analogue charge and decreasing the adsl charge so they will still make just as much when they finally have to scrap it. Current stats last I heard was about 1.1million lines (mostly businesses with one or more lines) and 300,000 adsl users.

Yeah, when ADSL prices supposedly comes down more people end up getting screwed with the fixed line price increase:rolleyes:

i am with 24-7, wired is superior and 'more reliable' most days, but for my needs wireless has kept my running costs low but the initial setup of R2500+ could scare anyone away. i have been with 24-7 for more than a year ... 2 major connection issues but were resolved eventually ... other than that the connection has been rock solid ... my @home bizness is showing a steady increase in profits with my fixed monthly expense for the wireless connection ... the adsl cap + price is what's holding me back from moving. NEOTel where r u¿

Wireless works pretty goodly

I use wireless -- point to point from my house to a high site about 15km away. A little flaky at my place (should be resolved with change in router board), but generally reliable, get consistent 20-40kBytes/sec downloads, uncapped (you get shaped a bit if you flog it outrageously). Company called Vlocity (www.vlocity.co.za). Do a lot of installations for small businesses and residential. Buying the wireless kit costs about R1600, up and running in a couple of days (depends if the installer dude is around). They run connections over VPN for security.

R340/pm -- their cheapest one (312kbps, goes up to 1Mbps I think).

I refuse to put in a phone line -- I in fact already have one coming into my house, but Telkom want to charge me R330 JUST TO TURN IT ON! F#ck off!

I also have my MTN 3G via my mobile in case of snakes.

I way prefer wireless ISPs. I use Voda and MTN HSDPA data bundles. No line rentals or any BS contracts. I pay for what I want and not what they want me to pay for (landline rental for a phone line I will never use). I get speeds of 170KB on MTN and 230KB on Vodacom.

I use Snowball in the Western Cape. Their service is reliable and a simple email gets me additional bandwidth @ R100/1GB. I am not locked into any contracts and pay on a monthly basis.

Being on a farm, telkom ADSL is a no go and Vodacom GPRS/EDGE is slow and unreliable at 60Kbps (App).

I work from home and the service from Snowball has been 100%. I never have to reload the router (Used to do this a few time per day the wrt54g/Vodacom service)

If you're in a similar situation in the Western Cape; well it's a no brainer to use them.

Looking forward, I'm hoping for speed increases and a higher/removal of the bandwidth usage cap.

Those dont really count as WISP's.
MTN and Vodacom have their networks well sorted out on a well know spectrum band and there is little to fault in terms of quality on HSDPA.

WISP's tho IMO mainly refer to small operators running on the 2.4 or 5GHZ networks and standard wireless equipment.

Personally I wouldn’t go for wireless, its just still to unstable in South Africa - America, UK, Oz yes but no here; we are really behind in some technologies in this country.

Sorry... wrong. Just a customer. Have no personal financial interest in them. Although I am thinking of pitching to them some fine Web content and messaging services to tidy up their site.

[note to the slow: there _was_ a punt there ... wink wink]

I think that is very uncalled for, just the kind of thing that would turn a forumite away. Anyway you should be able to see he registered at least 2 months ago and not just to make that post. Most of the posts here can be seen as people advertising their isps if that was advertising.
