Wits students protest over tuition fee increase

I wonder if the leaders of these students have sat down with the staff of the University - the labourers, the cleaners, the gardeners - and told them that they should not be getting a wage increase this year because the students don't feel the need to pay more.

Don't come here with your "white" mentally and spew your racist logic over here!!! :p

Just saw a quick live crossing on sabc 2 to the fools sitting in the road, cops read out court the order, little ****s refused to move... this is going to get interesting

Edit: seems they've been given 5min to clear out

Its always funny, they will strike today about the increase of fees (not to mention that the lecturers needs an increase also on their salary) and the next year they will strike because they dont get a 12% increase on their salaries?

This is very true, I didn't think about this. Nation of entitlement.

Which part of "they chased the car after it drove through the students" escapes you?
Girls must be very good at lifting cars.

The photos you showed could have been taken hours earlier (The angle of the sun shows it to be morning in those pics).
Has no relation to the event we are talking about.

Students breaking the law should be arrested and charged.
That's how they did it when I was at WITS.
No mucking about or molly-coddling.

They weren't sitting on the road for hours. The students left Wits via Jorissen. Walked around the campus until they came to Empire. Then they sat 10-15 minutes later, this happened. After which the student leaders took the students back into campus. There was no sitting on the road in the morning. Students marched from Parktown and got to Wits at around 11:30. They sang (a song difficult to sing while sitting because it requires a rhythmic stomping of feet) on Empire for about five minutes then went into campus.

Edit: Hard to stomp you feet in a: Right foot, left foot, double right foot when sitting.

Is that like having to count on your fingers? :p

Even sitting in the road for 2 minutes is illegal and a breach of #21 of the bill of rights.

Read the edit above. The stomping is not for timing.

Doesn't mean you can run people over.

Not condoning anyone running anyone over. However, in a highly charged situation with weapons being brandished, people act irrationally. It behooves BOTH sides to try to prevent that kind of highly charged situation for exactly that reason.

What those students subsequently did to the driver was attempted murder and cannot be justified either.

Didn't you hear - Wits wants to increase fees by 10.5% and these students want to study for free - so any violence is justified because peaceful protests don't work.

If you read previous posts you'd see that I said the reaction was extreme and he didn't deserve it.

So now what - hand over the thugs responsible to the police?

OK, I just get the impression that many of the students are basically arguing that it was justified because the man "started it" - some of them are even gloating about it - "that's what happens when you mess with us".

Some of them were even tweeting that they should have killed him.
