Wits students protest over tuition fee increase

Destroy all the technology, education, law systems and infrastructure brought in by the colonials. Let's start with Rhodes; toss out all the books and burn them all, then bulldoze the entire building to the ground because it is after all a colonial building. Anything less is blowing hot air and hypocrisy.

I was looking for somewhere to post this. Maybe we should create a single thread now as this monster grows?

UJ is one of my clients. I have received a call from a contact and he informed me that the students have started up at the main Kingsway Campus.

EDIT: Just learned that it nearly flared up at their Bunting Road Campus where I am based at the moment. We're usually safe from student protests and marches as Bunting Road is not very big in comparison to Kingsway.

These protests are getting huge. TUT has joined Tuks and CPUT is joining UCT today.

When the DA marched on Luthuli House, it was barricaded, and ANC supportors threw bricks. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Also, is the ANCYL part of the march? Seeing them march on the mother body will be priceless.

SASCO and EFF are the dominant players at UJ. At the moment UJ's SRC elections are in full swing, so their members are mostly drumming up support on the campuses from what I can tell.
 
On the subject of whether tertiary education is a right or privilege, during our generation tertiary education was a privilege and we perceived it as such, but in a world where employees are increasingly being called "knowledge workers", we have a "knowledge economy" and education is the most important determinant in a person's ability to escape the cycle of poverty, then education, especially tertiary education, cannot possibly be perceived as a privilege for a select, elite, wealthy few anymore. Tertiary education is a right.

We do not have a knowledge economy yet. Portions of it are, but they are by far in the minority compared to primary and secondary industries.
And it is possible to do really well for yourself without a degree...
The bill of rights sets out our rights. It does not include tertiary education.

I completely disagree. A functioning society needs workers in all sectors.

We as a society don't need everyone to go to varisty.

Wanted to include in the post above but it was already long.

A skilled tradesman is not subject to the same kind of job insecurity that a "knowledge worker" would be. Think about who gets retrenched when the economy takes a turn? People who work at banks, telecomms, financial services, IT services etc. - these are ye knowledge workers.
