Wits students protest over tuition fee increase

Wits University's management supports its students' demands for more funding for the higher education sector. The University agrees with its students that everyone has an equal right to access higher education. Wits’ Senior Executive Team will continue to lobby government, the private sector and other stakeholders to look at ways to resolve this crisis as soon as possible.

Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Adam Habib, will lead a delegation of vice-chancellors to the Union Buildings tomorrow to meet with the President and student leaders. He is committed to working with all stakeholders to develop creative solutions to the short- and long-term funding issues.

Closer to home, Wits has heard the voices of its students and recognises the financial burdens that they face. In this regard, Council has made several concessions pertaining to the upfront payment, the 2016 fee negotiation process, discounts for NSFAS and financially stressed students and the implementation of austerity measures.

The negotiation table is open to the student leaders and we are hopeful that they will take the opportunity to work with us to find a speedy resolution to this important issue, especially since our examinations are only ten days away. This is of utmost concern to the University’s management as it is in everyone's best interests for the academic programme to resume urgently.

The Vice-Chancellor is open to addressing students and is engaging with the student leadership on a convenient date and time for this to happen.

Lol. Gwede just made a bad situation worse for the ANC by refusing to sit down. Now the whole country saw the students chanting "ANC must fall".
 
Stupid fools will get the universities they deserve.

No one disagrees with the aims...it would be a different situation if we had a well-run, fiscally-disciplined government and there DEFINITELY was no funding available for this. As things stand in SA, there are any number of budgetary black holes that could cover these costs WITHOUT increasing taxation.

The only problem (and I say only like it's a small problem) is getting Government to stop the waste (corruption) and then monitor intentional spend more carefully.

Pie in la sky probably.
 
Let's not forget the September WHO guidelines for HIV prevention. That will be rolled out soon in SA it's thought once MCC approval of certain HIV drugs for prevention is passed. With HIV neg people receiving partial HIV drugs to prevent them acquiring HIV. There are many pressing issues which need to be addressed and this (free education) is not nearly the most important one given our high HIV/AIDS burden in SA, let's not forget the ones who suffer the most.

Look I think they can start NOW and not wait for fee scrapping. They can donate some of their salaries to UCT (their own varsities) to pay for undergrad studies. It's easy. They can make a monthly debit order running.
 
Raise income taxes 10%. There, all tertiary tuition free. Those who paid for themselves and now have to pay again, well go and pound sand. It will benefit SA in the long run.

Then drop other taxes to pay for that 10%. We pay to much in taxes.

How about govt stop wasting money, end the tenders, actually collect fines where due.

Govts won't stop wasting money or at least it will take many years of teaching them to do the right thing at every instance. But the students are hungry NOW!. Also, We pay less tax then Sweden.
