WMV to MP4 Converter

Hi all,

I searched around the forum for a free/open source WMV to MP4 converter--but couldn't find anything.

Basically, I have these WMV files that I need to get onto my iPod. Does anyone know of such an app which does this?

I tried Google--and will keep trying.

it costs money but then normally good programs cost money

i also find that programs that cost money dont need a degree in rocket science to get them to work

Thanks. Will do. Have just downloaded videora http://www.videora.com and will see how that works also.

Just tried to convert with videora. Terrible program to use. Got a whole bunch of ads within the app itself. And the conversion got to 99% and failed.

Will keep searching. May have to resort to a proprietary app.

Thanks beanie. Installed it and successfully converted my one file... but just the first 30 seconds of it The plus version is required to convert the whole video.

VLC player has the stream dump option. You can choose your required output and appropriate codecs.

If you want a commercial app, MPEG Encoder is nice but

Thanks Peter! I've just tried MPEG_Streamclip and it says my .wmv files are unsupported file types (tried a whole bunch of them).

Normal Winamp has a disk writer output plug-in installed by default that can do mp3. Not sure about mp4.

I use Canopus procoder...does most formats, I use it quite a lot for provideo stuff. I think there is a free version available, you'll just need to search a bit.

I completely forgot about mediacoder which I have used in the past. A bit tricky to use--but VERY powerful. http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediacoder/

Try also AlltoAVi.

You may need to get those codecs cleaned up. Try the KL codec
pack, it has a cleanup utility and maybe will install a WMV filter
for you so that MpegStreamClip will work.

Super uses mediacoder as one of its options.

That worked, thanks Super is really great. I think I may land up using it as a last resort if all the other options (below) come to nothing.

Unfortunately, it didn't do this. It still says that the wmv's are unsupported.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I'm just taking a look at PSP Video 9 (free) following the advice of this article.

I also tried to use Plato Video To iPod Converter (got the free one from giveawayoftheday), which successfully converted the file (it actually increased the video quality!)--but the video and audio were out of sync.

Leftfoot just wrt Canopus, it is unfortunately trialware. I'm looking for opensource or freeware

There is, however, very slight lack of sync between video and audio which I think may have been my fault from messing around with some settings.
