Haha... OK so you know that there is a lot of controvery in the USA right now over the new TSA Full body scanner and "enhanced pat-down" security checks. Basically if you refuse the full body scan... they will take you out of line for a pat down which is fairly invasive (they rub you all over including genitals). You can read more about it here.

One Funny man put it this way... New TSA motto: Can't see London, can't see France unless we see your underpants.

Well this woman thought she would make it clear she wasn't carrying anything under her clothing... by wearing a bikini! :) What a very sensible passenger.

Load of crap. Wonder how they are going to "see" drugs and explosives? If the sniffer dogs are not going to do it, the "fat" security guys and girls are sure as heck not going to do it. This scanner is another Bush related paranoia. Crap. Fnck the yanks. They don't want us spending our money on them then stuff 'em.

And this is why I'd never submit a research paper to a conference hosted in America (or go present one there).

I'm sure they'll get by fine without you.

I don't mind full body scans when I consider the conditions soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq have to put up with because of Islamic extremists.......

Let's call it an own goal, especially as the US invasion of Afghanistan now exceeds the time the Soviets spent there.

I don't think you know the value of tourism. If many people feel that way then their tourism $$ go down, just like it did during Bush years. If everyone had the attitude that his action alone is insignifigant then no one would do anything.

And as for Afghanistan...I think they are trying to get out of the mess they created.

Believe it or not, they don't. There's a reason the IEEE now hosts most conferences in non-American cities. An extremist government (like the USA's) is just counter-inducive to any scientific advance.

meh I think most tourists are rational individuals who won't forgo a holiday to the U.S because of the few seconds it takes to walk through a full body scanner or some paranoid fear some perv is fapping to an xray pic you .......

One area of concern though could be the health effects for frequent travellers. Getting zapped often can't be a good thing.

A visit to one of those Hispanic drug lord invested slums where the mean tough USA swat cops fear to tread would be nice . . . .

and btw , touring in the USA is hell, the taxi's is a rip off (a flight is cheaper between the cities than the taxi ride to the airport), traffic is hell in the major cities(two hours from New York to the SoL ! ! !) , public transport is so so(trains only cover one halve of New York) and now this TSA bull.

um, I just spent six weeks in the USA... and have not encountered one inkling of what you have mentioned. Traveling around here is bliss. The highways are wide and well kept. The drivers are courteous.
The petrol costs half of what we pay in SA. There are rest stops and restaurants well marked all the way along every highway. People drive carefully and calmly. There is a lot to see and do here.

Regarding the TSA thing... after the thanksgiving weekend it has become obvious that most Americans are willing to put up with the invasive security checks if it means better safety for them on the flights. There was an expected protest during the last week, that fizzled out. Most people just accept it now.

Does anyone remember us in South Africa having to have our handbags and goods searched everytime we went into a Mall in South Africa during the 1980s?

Americans need to listen to their forefathers. The full body scan and the invasive pat down hardly improve safety and yet we are meant to give up some pretty basic rights as humans for it. What a joke
