I see you picked mostly name brand stuff though? Was that intentional?

I know for example that say grapefruits are easily 2x the price at WW. Mushrooms not far behind.

Woollies sells brand name stuff with a low margin 'cos that's not where they make big profits (volumes too low).

They make their big margins on foodstuff.

Yes, it was. I dont think it will be fair to compare the Woolies brand to the P'nP brand. Woolies is definitely of a better quality, so I expect it to be more expensive ... especially the fruit & veggies.

Fair enough.

hmmm I will have to rethink my strategy of buying fresh stuff at WW and toiletries etc at PnP.

I recently bought a box of naartjies from Fruit & Veg (not sweet or very juicy) the next week I bought from Woolworths and the taste was excellent (sweet & juicy).

Compared to shoprite pricing from about a week ago:
Koo Baked Beans 410g | 6,99 6,95 R5.99
Koo Fresh Garden Peas 410gr | 11,99 14,95 R9.99 (after R2.00 eezicoupon)
All Gold Tomato Sauce 700g | 14,99 18,95 R17.99
Mrs Balls Original Chutney 470g | 19,99 18,95 R18.99
Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid 750ml | 20,99 20,99
We always buy the refill rather as it is cheaper. | 11,39 16,99 R16.99 (after R1.00 eezicoupon)

But the situation above changes from day to day to week to week I've found. The other thing one also needs to take into account is the noname substitutes that one can find at eg. PnP and Shoprite that tends to be cheaper than these name brands.

Other factors also affect things. e.g. The local Spar is open till 20h00 pretty much every day - convenient if you work till late.

Woolies foods are genetically modified.

Woolworths shill?

Spar has overall the highest prices on name brands, but by far the best specials when they do have them.

Woolies foods are genetically modified.

Source? AFAIK they are specifically against it:

BIODIVERSITY

Woolworths SA is absolutely committed to selling products that do not cause harm to the natural world around us in the way they are made. We have done a number of things to make sure that this is the case.

Genetically modified (GM) ingredients are taken out of our food wherever possible.

Any GM ingredients remaining are clearly labelled – which means you can make informed choices while you’re shopping.

Correction: Not against it but at least clearly indicate it, not like others who remain mum on the topic...

Where possible, I try to buy my fresh produce from Woolworths. The quality is miles above that of most other retailers and what's more, their fresh produce actually stays fresh a lot longer than anywhere else.

Our local PnP is open till 8pm everyday excl Fridays and Saturdays when it stays open till 9pm. Heck they were one of the handful of stores in the whole western cape that were open till 8/9pm on christmas day and newyears day.
A local Woolies is open till 7/8pm most of the week as well. Probably brought on by the fact that the local Spar is open till 9pm every day.

But yes, there are other factors at play as well.

I recommend we make a Google Sheet, give public access to it, with trusted sources editing access to it, and then those people update prices to items. Adjusted for region, as I understand coastal regions to be slightly cheaper.

Like so, we can have a full list of all items and easily compare your shopping list.

Down the road, functionality can be built in, so that one only enters your shopping list items, and it automatically gives you back the best/cheapest to shop go to.

Also, special prices can become part of the whole thing.

This will go a great way towards full consumer knowledge in order to edge closer to the ideal of a 'perfect market', economics-wise.

If someone somehow manages to monetise this idea, I at least want to be given credit for the inspiration, LOL

I buy 90% of my stuff at Woolies now. Certain things like toiletries I normally cannot find there so I go to Clicks or Dischem for those.

I do tend to buy expensive pre-packaged stuff though as for a bachelor it makes a lot of sense instead of buying boxes of stuff in bulk that gets thrown out because it's gone bad before I've been able to eat it.

Had a curry tonight which cost me R40, desert was epic fruit salad which was discounted (still pricey though). Breakfast is crumpets with maple syrup. All Woolies stuff.

We buy the non-perishables from Checkers and the rest from Woolworths. Their food is always fresh and tasty.

Fair enough.

I buy all of my fruit and veggies at woolies but that is about it. Their stuff is always better quality and lasts longer.
I work in the fresh produce chain so I know how long it takes for fruit/veggies to get from the farmer to a pick n pay or spar and woolies is a few days faster.
