I wanted to inform you directly about two separate incidents that targeted our stores this week. It’s important to me that our customers are kept up to date on key issues like these and that you hear the news directly from us.
In the early hours of the morning on both Thursday (28 May) and Friday (29 May), improvised explosive devices were detonated in Woolworths stores, between 01:00 and 02:00, when the stores were closed. The first occurred in Pretoria, at the Menlyn Park store and the second in Bloemfontein at the Preller Square branch. While our Menlyn Park store has reopened, Woolworths Preller Square remains closed while the investigation is underway.
Most importantly, I’m relieved to share that no one was harmed in either incident. Some staff members are, understandably, shaken by the events and our team is providing all the necessary support.
On both occasions, we informed the South African Police Service (SAPS) immediately who initiated a sweep of the areas ensuring no further threats were present, and the Hawks have been appointed to investigate. The authorities have our full support, and we will continue to work closely with them as the investigation unfolds. At this stage, no further information on the nature of the devices or the motive behind these attacks is available.
As a precaution, we have increased vigilance across our stores nationwide, and specialist forensic teams have been contracted to strengthen security and intelligence.
I’d like to take this moment to share a final thought with you. I understand that times like these can be unsettling and frightening. At Woolworths, we are standing strong in the values that have guided us for decades and helped shape the organisation we are today. Targeted attacks will not deter us.
We will keep showing up, keep opening our doors, for you – our customers.
Please be assured that we are taking every action and doing everything in our power to protect our people and you, our customers, who remain the highest priority.
Kind regards,
Spencer
