On many occasions i have been to woolworths to buy food and found food with sell by dates of the same day i am shopping
Eg. today is 26/09/11 and the sell by date of the food is 26/09/11
surely the food should have been removed from the shelf
peoples thoughts and comments please and any similar experiances

the sell by date means it can still be sold.

There is probably a use by date that is 1-7 days later.

Exactly. if it exceeds use by date that's a different story. In my experience however, the food is still good days after the use by date nevermind the sell by date

The items get taken off the night of the date on the sell by date, many times they will receive stock that will have its sell by date two days later. Aka the date will always be less than or equal to the sell by date. No problem there...

They should remove the sell by dates, makes everyone scared of the food. Freaks me out, if i see something that is sell by the same day i am looking for it i won't buy it.

Actually i pretty much grab from the back of the stack regardless of the dates as the fresh stuff is always behind obviously :D.

I buy the sandwiches sell by date and use by date is the same

That means your sandwich was made that day, for consumption on that day.

i buy them for lunch in durban and often they have yesterdayd date on them ..with todays date at the back ,,soo if u snooze
u get caught

Depends on the type of food. Mostly though these okes are scared senseless at the possibility of court cases so all those dates are super conservative.

If its over the date a bit I just inspect it very thoroughly before munching it.

I notice it often, but it's only an issue if the sell by date and the use by date are the same day. Most of the time I want to use the food in 2/3 days time, so then I give it a skip. That being said, I've used food past the use by date and it's always been fine. Just rather don't do it with things like fish!

The trick with woolies is to be tall with long arms. Reach to the top and back - there you will find the fresh food.

+1 learnt that back in the day when I used to be a cold room and packer for Woolworths ;)

Shorter short armed ppl (read women) have asked me on several occasions to reach for them.

The food is still good several days after the sell by date. Nothing to worry about.
