Had a good chat with Ron before the start. Lots of good things coming. Cape Town Guys with localized issues things should be on the up in coming months. 42Mbps upgrades along with more backhaul on the way. No timelines yet. Will see if Lars will reveal more.

Points on innovation. Marketing stuff. WINC, RBM and some others. Claiming first to open to social media to interact with customers. First dropped call map. Will add option to report data issues in the future. My tools still in beta. Plays video: blurbs some benefits. SMS to be added soon. New system called BEAM (NGBSS) to manage all aspects of billing etc. Admits some hiccups but resolved.

Ask Lars or Ron what's the use of 900MHz if there is no throughput because all the users have to share the one tower.

Also how does cell-breathing affect 900MHz?

Is the 42M network on 900MHz or 2100MHz?

How do they achieve 42? Dual Carrier / MIMO?

Back to the future. Talks to promise of bringing woosh 8 months ago. First 900mhz release 7 network. Today. > 2500 towers deployed 1550 in production. > 2500km fiber in the ground. Promises network status page with localized reports. Round about 40% population coverage. 115% coverage in PE.

Some more questions posted earlier this week on mybb for the event:

1- How many 42 towers are ACTIVE in the network?
2- Where are they?
3- What is the average speed a user can expect?
4- How big is each footprint of a cell?
6- Do you have 42 modems in stock?
7- Where can I buy them?
8- Will we get new pricing with 42?

Why still 40%?, they said 40% in January. Was there no roll-out since then?

Why do they use such a low level to calculate coverage? It's 32 times weaker than the other networks. Does that not distort the actual coverage numbers?

Do we need 42mbps? Lars says not so much his network has capacity. But there are drivers for more bandwidth. Lists Apple, google. Complains about too many cat videos on YouTube. Points to android and Facebook. Says if Facebook starts taking on amazon and the likes with its large Facebook following it could do interesting things. ZTE handsets. Started 4 years ago now no. 4 in shipped handsets. No 1 in UK Finland france and others. Huawei similar vein to ZTE.

Looks at handset pricing over last 4 yrs. ZTE v800 $150 with decent specs running android. Cheap HW makes for more traffic. Blurb on data usage estimates for types of phones and tablets. Increases year on year. Global traffic from 2010 to 2015 92% increase. Source cisco VNI Mobile 2011. MEA growth 129% YoY. Also mobile average speed 2010 to 2015 83%. Peak at 5.5mbps.

Pretty graph on data usage prediction. Video biggest chunk. Yay more cattube.

Qualcomm Video on HSPA+. Blurbs on benefits. Big uptake. Expect 1b connections by 2012. Roadmap to 168mbps 2012/13. Burst rates aggregated pipes.

Still much better than what Jan and Morkhans have reported so far. Don't think they got more than 2Mb/s yet today.

I think the problem is that tower 49103 that's next to the event/my house is still turned off so they connected to another and with cell breathing they did not get a strong signal. I can currently only see 50135 that normally disappears during the day as the coverage shrinks due to number of devices on it. Sitting on -75 sBm now.

Talks about work in PE. adding 2100 DC on top of 900. Using PE as test site. Techies have worked hard learned some interesting things. SDR with release 8. All IP. reiterated dual carrier test site.

Benefits. Speed. But not key thing. 42s focus on more capacity. (Jannie has said the same thing ;))

So they switched off some towers to probably give more bandwidth to the tower at the event?

Are you still getting a downlink profile of 21Mb/s?

So they're rolling out 42Mb/s on 2100 and not 900?
