Hi all

Starting a new job next year (finally). The company I am at now has very low levels of staff morale due to a number of factors. I would like to know from your experience what do you think of staff morale? Do managers bother with it in an office environment? Any suggestions and comments are welcome.

Unpleasant work environment makes for an unhappy worker, which in turn which will produce undesirable results. So yes it is important.

Companies should care about morale, because bad morale ultimately cost/waste a lot of money.

A happy team is a productive team...

There will always be an exception - look to transfer him/her out asap.

And don't forget the small, petty issues as they could fester and cause problems later, so never delay what can be done immediately.

What are the factors if I may ask?

You just keep hitting the lotto, don't you?

Morale plays a big role. If I could help it, I'd work in a cave that just has internet, food, water :D

You should try and devise a plan to keep your morale up. You don't need to change the environment, just ensure you have the correct mindset.

Staff morale - working environments - all just textbook semantics.

When a company hires people it is not in the interest of that company to look after good work environments or ensure staff morale is kept at high levels. The company is investing a lot of money in staff salaries. Staff members better shape up or leave.

A good company paying good salaries should milk workers, ensure that their work input is 10x that of the salary paid, in addition, the company should generate at least 10x the income they are spending on the salary for it to be successful. Good advice for these companies is to let employees work long hours, 100% maximum in accordance with laws. Limit time off to the maximum and refrain from paying additional bonuses and overtime if and where possible. I believe that fear should be invoked. Employee progress monitoring should be done at least twice a day. Written warnings should be issued with immediate effect when and where possible, and layoffs / firing be done as regular where possible. Staff privileges should be minimized as far as possible, as they are at a work place and not an entertainment center.

House has the same mentality as many bosses.
And then he wonders why his employees have left and he now has a bunch of utter palookas working for him.

(for anyone who doesn't get it, Google pretty much lives employee morale)

And then you get those Japanese companies that put most focus on employee morale by introducing massage rooms, an hour without your tie, table tennis rooms, etc.

All of which have aided in improved production and productivity.
