I once worked a contract for a company in Lesotho. Fresh out of varsity, 23 years old.
We stayed on the owner's farm outside Lady Brand - in a bunch of rondawels he had. On the farm was also a big entertainment area. A large thatched building with a massive fireplace, pool table, big couches with a view of the Maluti's, a bar, Projector connected to DSTV and a dvd player, a room with a sauna and a Jacuzzi, pool, open plan kitchen, pantry and walk-in refrigerator. The bar and refrigerator was always stocked. We had free use of the place. All meals were covered.
As the weather changed and it got colder - a elderly Basotho gent who worked for him would come in and light a fire in each of our rondawel's fireplaces and set out some glasses of sherry, ready for when we came in. Weekends we had the run of the place, didn't even bother to find something to do.
I have never worked so hard in my life, as for that guy. We we're still being paid junior level salaries (I spend more on groceries nowadays). But the work environment and fringe benefits was incredible.
