Hi All

So I have a interview in Namibia and may take the job if they offer me a good package, so far it includes the usual (medical, pension , housing). Anyone working\living in Namibia? What is it like? Do you miss SA?

I just need to know about taxation - from what I've researched it seems SA has an agreement with Namibia so I should only have to pay tax in SA? Can anyone confirm this? I would hate to be taxed twice.

Where in Namibia?

It's a small place. If you're from a larger city like Johannesburg or Cape Town, you'll get frustrated with there just being fewer options on pretty much everything. Property prices in Windhoek are fairly rough.
I spent six months there for work and was well and truly grateful to leave, when the project was done.

The pace of things is a lot slower there than Johannesburg though, for example, which works very well for some people.

I'm from Durban so I'll be alright with fewer options I suppose. I've been looking at property and it is a lot more expensive there. I don't plan on selling my current home just yet so I will probably rent for a while .

I thought Windhoek was one of the larger more developed areas in Namibia?

It is a more developed area, but that's relative. They have a population of 2.5m. We're at 56m. Durban is in a different league still to Windhoek. I'd strongly suggest you take the two-odd hour flight to Windhoek and check it out before committing to moving there.

Rental in Windhoek is rough. If you go out of town, it gets more reasonable and the drive into town wasn't bad the last time I did it.
For some reason the government isn't zoning many new properties in Windhoek which is causing the expensive property prices in the town.

I just 6 days in Namibia on business. It's a stunning place. I loved every moment and experience. Only got as far as Keetmanshoop in the south and Otjiwarongo in the north. Oh, and Swakopmund to the west. Amenities in Windhoek were good. People were amazing. The friends I made were the sort I would be happy to socialise with any day.

The economy is in recession. But the people are upbeat about most things.

The country is extremely dry at the moment. There was rain about, but nothing that got any of the rivers flowing.

I would happily go back in a heart beat.

Ah That makes sense, I wont mind driving a bit if I can save a substantial amount. I'm flying in on Tuesday to see the place and get a feel. So that will definitely help my decision.

And...? We're waiting in suspense :giggle:

What was it like?

Lol bchip. So the flight wasn't too bad, around 3 hours with a stop in Botswana first. The place is very very quiet when compared to Durban. People are really friendly and helpful. The place was amazingly clean but also very dry(I know its basically a desert). The interview went well with positive feedback but I'm still awaiting a written offer before I decide on relocating as everything is at least 15% more expensive there .

What are your reasons for wanting to move there?

Grew up in a low density populated town, Namibia seems offers this whilst being able to work in a decent size city without the severe threat to one's life being present as it is here.

That's the main thing, safety on the semi outskirts, simply not available here.
