China has started mobilizing military forces around the Korean peninsula in response to rising tensions that follow recent threats by North Korea to launch missile attacks against its southern neighbor and the United States.

According to US officials, Pyongyang’s declaration of a ‘state of war’ against South Korea has led to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to increase its military presence on the border with the North. The officials say the process has been going on since mid-March, and includes troop movements and readying fighter jets. The PLA is now at ‘Level One’ readiness, its highest.

Chinese forces, including tanks and armored personnel carriers, have been spotted in the city of Ji’an and near the Yalu River, which splits China and North Korea. Other border regions were also reportedly being patrolled by planes.

China has also been conducting live-firing naval exercises in the Yellow Sea, scheduled to end on Monday. The move is widely viewed as open support for North Korea, which continues to show extreme opposition to the US-South Korean military drills that are to last until May.

The news comes as the US deployed its USS Fitzgerald destroyer off the coast of North Korea, adding to its Sunday deployment of F-22 fighter jets to take part in the drills with the friendly South, which has further served to heighten tensions on the peninsula.

Meanwhile, North Korea has been mobilizing its short and medium-range missile arsenal, according to analyses of satellite imagery. Officials say Pyongyang is set to test its new KN-08 medium-range mobile missile; they say preparations have been spotted in the past. Pyongyang claims that since March 26, its forces have been placed on their highest possible status of alert.

Although officials believe Pyongyang will not provoke Seoul during the war games, they also fear that a miscalculation by South Korea could lead to all-out war, following its promise of retaliation against the North, should it launch its missiles first.

Well i guess it's better to be prepared than unprepared in this situation. Apologies if this is a duplicate i never saw a thread for this.

I thought China backed NK...? I hope I'm wrong?

Um... WWIII? Don't you think the announcement is a bit premature Killa? The only talk of engaging in war was from NK... and they only said it was 'imminent'. Not saying we wouldn't see a war, but I do think this the title is a bit out of whack :)

World War? Sounds like just a Korean War.

If China backs NK, and the USA backs SK ... well that sounds like a fairly global conflict.

Sounds like they're enforcing their border with NK, not exactly giving them support. I would imagine it's to prevent a mass exodus of refugees into china if **** goes down.

Word war 3? Lol, hardly. WW3 will happen over something like the island disputes, not over North Korea.

I think marine1 made a similar post... last year or the year before. Over the exact same issue! As per usual.. it never happens.

Yea it would be a world war because no matter what happens the US will be involved, if this war does get going volatile countries like pakistan and india may resume their hatred and the muslims will rise and start killing even more, it could suck many countries into the conflict with the likes of france, Britain etc getting involved.

Perhaps the headline was a bit much but one wrong move by anyone involved could spark WW3. One small incident could set it off. Basically as it stands we are one stupid move away from all out war. For china to be preparing for war is a bit of worry. World war would include countries from around the world so NATO would fit the bill?

Ghoti find those threads please, i have never seen NK threaten the US with nukes, i have never seen the chinese army gearing up for a war. I would love to see those threads that happen every year. Even experts on the situation say it is very different this time. Far more agression from NK and far more aggression from SK and the US.

Seeing that people can't count too well the next conflict involving the world would be World War IV. The First World War was during Napoleon's time.

Off topic - In my opinion the ongoing global war on terror is the 3rd World War.

On topic - I don't see how China can get involved in anything if the North is the aggressor. That would be very, very stupid of them. If the North strikes the South or any American targets in the Pacific (I doubt they have the capabilities to do that anyway) then either country and their allies will have the right to defend themselves and retaliate. China responding to that will escalate the conflict.

Nope. That was the Napoleonic Wars and that was very Eurocentric. The colonies of the respective powers may have contributed troops, but the fighting was done very much on European soil and in European waters.

I don't think they are looking to get involved directly against the US or SK but they are preparing for any sort of fall out that might hit them. It's better to be prepared than unprepared. If NK decide china is also a target it would good for the chinese to be ready and who knows the chinese may support NK even though they are acting like they don't.

Be prepared i think is the issue for china and nothing more. What they would do if the war did break out, staggy that is the question :D.

Say what now? Nice to know that Blaauwberg is in Europe along with India. Never mind the Caribbean and Reunion.

If you compare what occurred in Europe to what occurred elsewhere, the other conflicts were generally small in scale. Compare that to the Pacific & North African theatres during World War Two

Not quite the point. As far as a global conflict goes it is up there. You don't need massive death rates for somewhere to be strategic.

True, no harm in being prepared for any eventuality, but I can't see them getting involved if the North attacks first. Unless a foreign army (US and/or coalition/UN army) crosses the 38th parallel they can't do much if the South and her allies respond to North Korean aggression.
