Would you buy this?

Did some nice 4x4ing this weekend in a Prado, and the bug has really bitten me to get a proper offroader again. I'd like to be sensible financially though and get something that's not too much more expensive than the Impreza. This seems to fit the bill, and from what I've read, the V8 is quite reliable.

Fuel economy's terrible, but I do about 10km/day around town, and all the rest of my mileage is open road stuff. Is it a stupid move to consider this car?
 
That'll use a ton of fuel on the open road too.

And make sure they throw in a tow rope as part of the deal, because you'll be needing it sooner or later.

They're nice vehicles, very comfortable and very capable, but *not* fuel efficient and *definitely not* reliable.
 
I would not touch a Landy with a barge poll. I know Landy drivers love them, but they are renowned to be one of the most unreliable vehicles in the world. Like they say, better you buy a toolbox and DIY manual with that Landy :twisted:
 
Seems like the prudent thing is to stay away. Such a nice car though! The other cool one I saw was an 80 series Land Cruiser ('94 model I think) for R84k. But it had 380 000km on the clock.
 
Ah a Cruiser is always a safer buy, but 380k might be a bit much. Although I've heard of those motors doing way more mileage than that, it will all depend on the track / abuse record of the vehicle. Then again taken in context, should the motor require some work, once it's done, that should be that. A Top gear (or maybe it was a Geremy Clarckson's Motorworld) proggy some time back had an episode in Australia about the Landies demise their, and the switch over to Cruisers. The gist was that the Cruiser's reliability was second to none, and Ausies going into the Outback would rather do it with a Cruiser than a Landy.

Me, I'd go for the Jeep XJ :D
 
hmm that does look inciting indeed. Truth be told I've been struggling to decide between getting a Jeep XJ, and a LC 80. If the LC comes with a decent service history, then I would go for it if I was you. Worry about the high mileage later. I doubt very much that you would be unhappy with that, or at least go take it for a test drive (if possible), I'm sure you'd fall in love if everything checks out ok. Plus it has some nice extras, to boot.

Yeah, and at R78k, I could actually take R10k or so and give it a nice major service right off the bat.

Exactly, go for it!!!! :D Take it to a LC specialist and have them give it a once over, you should have a good idea where you stand from there, and can plan accordingly.

Hehe no thanks, first have to finish paying my Merc ... then comes the toys.:p Just more than a year to go, then I'll get my Jeep, or maybe a LC 80... still have time to decide.

I would never have expected someone from green peace to fork out on a 19 year old 4x4 :P
 
If you buy the landcruiser, you could replace the motor with the difference in price between the two...

Oh well, sms'ed the guy with the Cruiser and have had no reply, so perhaps it's sold. The Landie is still available though.

You're a tree hugger and want to buy a V8 Landy :eek:

Rather get a 2.8 Diesel. Maybe a Misubitshi, Toyota?
They pretty well priced now.
