Diesels are less reliable and also emit all sorts of other dirty emissions, especially the older diesels.

Don't think that small Pajero is 4x4 though.

So you want a car like 4x4 and not a pick-up? Why not buy a Nissan Sani which is dirt cheap now, ontop of you current Subaru ?

The SWB Pajero is definitely 4WD. It's only some of the Pajero Ios that came in 4x2 IIRC. Not too keen on the Sani as it's a bit too converted bakkie-ish. Also can't afford to keep the Impreza and get another car.

O ok, but you want a Car type 4x4 then yes? And newish as it will be your only car so it needs to be very reliable.

Yeah. That's why I like that maroon Pajero, even though it's ugly as ****. It's petrol (so, reliable) and has "only" 163000km on the clock.

As for the petrol bit:
Diesel I find to be way more reliable and less full of crap as opposed to Petrol cars. HOWEVER, you need to get it with less than 100k kms and drive it like a diesel. Don't drive it at 4k revs and so on. Diesels never die if driven correctly. Also on 4x4 diesel > Petrol if used for actual 4x4 driving. This is due to the high amount of power at low revs as opposed to a petrol.

Seriously I would buy that Jeep if I was to buy a car in your situation now. If you feel uneasy about Diesel vs Petrol, maybe ask on the 4x4 forums first to set your mind at ease.
 
You must see what the American Subaru Forum has to say about Jeeps! :eek:

We've discussed this before...why not go my route? Have a look on the 4x4 Forum, of the pics of the Forester being put through its paces...I will try and find the link.

Faz, where I was on Saturday, I don't think a Forester will go. Hence the desire for a "full-on" 4x4.

BCO, the thinking on the 4x4 Forum is that a Forester WILL go where full on 4x4's go.

I certainly had that Forester that I had for a month not even sneezing at one road on about a 20 degree incline that was definitely meant for donkeys...took it with ease.

I wish I could find the photos also on the 4x4 Forum where they took a Forester on a full blown 4x4 course and it coped just as well as the Landies.

Just as, I would think. All depends on your drive style. If you browse http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=139 you'll find some fuel consumption threads I'm sure. From what I remember, it's not all that bad, certainly no worse than any other V8. You are probably looking around 6 - 7 km/l with a V8 4X4, but buying a V8 is not about the fuel consumption, it's about the pleasure :D

All that power comes at a price, the good news though, the fuel consumption on a V8 is probably better than a V6, of course, all depends on your drive style.

Only draw back of the Forester is the lack of ground clearance compared to a "proper" 4X4. This is a common problem with soft-roaders, even the very capable Suzuki Grand Vitara is plagued with the problem, although to a lesser degree than many others.

I think that he may be referring to cases where ground clearance, in particular, is important :)

Surely in terms of approach and departure angles the Forester's a bit limited? That thread you linked also mentioned that the low range only provides a 20% reduction.

*edit* at the guys above - the Forester's clearance is quite good IIRC - about 215mm.

Yes, approach angles are lower, but in that one link, you will see that there's a rather nice bull bar attached to that Forester that improves the approach angle dramatically.

And yes, at no point should ground clearance create a problem, there's plenty of it...if you are getting stuck with that sort of clearance, you should be driving a tank! :p
