I can't agree with you there. Ground clearance becomes a big issue doing real off road driving, especially so when negotiating very rocky terrain or even crossing over a steep pivot point often found on off-road routes. There is a very good reason that lift kits are so popular.

I hear you, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Don't lift kits work on the car and raise it to a point where a step ladder is needed to get in, but they leave the diff still sitting 200mm off the ground? I am obviously not talking about Monster Trucks where the whole damned thing is lifted 6 feet off the ground.

hehe no, no step ladders required. Indeed it only lifts the body of the vehicle, as can be seen here: http://search.autotrader.co.za/www/cars_advert?id=201031186976853 The Advantage is in exactly that, the raised body increases your ability to crawl over rocky terrain without bits of the body getting hung-up on the rock. Also when going over an obstacle it could easily happen that your vehicle's body is caught on the top bit, as seen here, known as the break-over angle: http://img.off-road.com/aimages/articlestandard/chevy/222007/429856/i0_l.jpg

The diff unfortunately stays the same height, this can be raised through fitting bigger wheels, giving even more clearance. This becomes especially important when driving in ruts where your diff could get caught on the "middel mannetjie".

So although your diff ground clearance is important, often there are ways you can negotiate an obstacle in such a way that it has little impact. However, if your body clearance is too low, there is very little you can do to prevent a problem. Of course, this is all very specific to the type of terrain and your individual needs.

Sorry, I still have a problem with being able to climb over a mountain and then having my diff popped by the pebble on the top of it! :p
