Hey Mzansi peeps
I have an idea that has been always on my mind ever since I started blogging. I thought I could share on this forum to see if anyone would be interested.
After returning to the MyBB forums this year I realized there are many South African people who would like to start blogging but do not have the necessary knowledge and tools, I also realized there are those who are blogging but still have a lot to learn like me.
The aim of my idea is to help the above mentioned people gain some experience in blogging without feeling overwhelmed and / or intimidated.
But another reason I want to initiate this is because I feel South African bloggers are not united like those overseas. I am not sure why, maybe it’s because most bloggers overseas treat their blogs as business, because it is usually their only source of income.
There’s a little story I would like to share with you, but if you don’t have time for stories, you can skip to “what is my idea” below.
My Story:
There’s a blogger I will not mention his name nor his blog, I think his blog is a year (or less) old but has managed to gather over 3 500 Facebook fans. His a hell of an internet marketer if you ask me. At one point he ran a competition on his Facebook page, he was trying to increase his Facebook fan base while also promoting the website tangled.co.za which sells cell phone accessories. I entered the competition and fortunate enough, I was a winner – walked away with a Blackberry wall charger, car charger and earphones. Next thing I received a friend request from him, cool (I thought), I then started liking his Facebook posts, commenting and so on so he could get more exposure. He then ran another competition, which was also sponsored by Tangled. I decide to ask him how he got the guys at Tangled to sponsor; I’d like them to sponsor my blog if it was possible. And both my blogs are a good match for Tangled. The guy never responded to me, off which he proved me right that South African bloggers are not united. I mean, he wouldn’t have lost anything if he had helped me make a deal with the guys at Tangled. I had a burner on my sites' sidebar promoting one of his blogs, I have since removed it. I cannot help someone who is not willing to help me while they can.
Motor of the story; there is no unity among SA bloggers, one of the things I’d like to do with this venture, is to breach that!
What is my idea?
I want to start a blog with 4 other South Africans. Out of that four, two will be people who have never blogged before but have passion to. I have not decided if the blog will cater for the SA audience (you know the kind of blog for South African by South Africans?), or whether it will serve the international crowd (I guess me and 4 other guys we’ll have to talk about that).
The blog could be a mixture of reviews, cooking, technology, writing, Internet etc. Can be anything from fuel prices to interest rates to the best pap and wors recipe
Even though I mentioned 4 contributors, everyone who would like to contribute is very welcome as long they are from SA. The four peeps (and me) will co-own the blog, that’s the difference.
What’s the aim of all this?
My primary aim revolves around four words – HELP!
I always look for an opportunity whereby I can lend a helping hand whenever I can. I am not only trying to help those who will be involved in the blog (i.e. writers), but also those (the readers) who will benefit from the knowledge will we offer.
And the benefit?
I know one thing, because I have been there! Starting a blog on your own is kind of intimidating, you ask yourself a lot of question like “will I keep up”, “will people find my information of value”, “how will I get readers”, “will I get RIO” and so on. So this will benefit those who have yet to start a blog because they’re unsure if they have what it takes. It will serve as a learning curve towards starting their own personal blogs.
It will also benefit those who are already blogging as it will give them even more exposure to the World Wide Web. An opportunity to link to your excising blog is one you can never refuse.
I will also benefit me because I know I will learn new things from the guys. Even though someone has never blogged before, they might be good at marketing (which I suck lol) and other stuff I am yet to learn.
Conclusion
I would love to say more to convince everyone but honestly, I am not a person of words, I am more action. If anyone is interested, please PM me and I will let you know the next step. Make it quick because I am planning the launch around December (if possible). I am sure this will be a fun experience for everyone.
P.S I DO NOT require a cent from you; I will pay for everything involved until the blog can pay for itself. But if there is anything anyone can help with like logo design (not financing it but to create one), it will be very much appreciated.
