I personally like the idea of ads!! People are focusing to much on the content here.. Yes series are the way to go.. But think now..
Say we have 500 000 subscribers, where 100 000 watch Desperate House Wives..
Now by collecting their data such as age, gender and possibly allowing them to select their interests on sign up, you can recommend shows that they might like. (All part of data mining) Which provides users with a better experience.. Kinds like lastFM
You are able to say to advertising agencies, listen who is your target market? 30 - 45 year olds interested in technology for their house? Yes i can distinguish them in my user base..
I can guarantee you that 40 000 people of your target audience will see your add!
That kind of thing would be a gold mine! You could even use the ad revenue to subsidize episode prices...
So the more specific a users profile and more adds they see, (set some maximum like 3 within 30min or something) the cheaper the episode is for them.
Brilliant idea, I will def support it if no streaming, and no download so what if there are ads in there, you can always ffwd... LOL cheaper is beter, even free would work, get the advertisers to pay for it. Ads only allowed if we don't have to download it with ads included. possibly distribution via the vendors in flea markets LOL
BTW, even if everyone pirates it or passes it over to their buddies, the adverts get sent too, free distribution of the ads, meaning more coverage, its a def win win situation
