WoW poll on Mygaming

7000 SA players according to Blizzard.
Of that, about 50% will be prepared to move = 3500.

Rope in some 500 new players about 3 months after it starts.

Hmmmm ... 4000 players on one WOTLK server ... maybe that will work.

But, what kind of a server will it be (RP / PVP+RP / PVP)
I don't know how many people play on one server at a time though.

Oh man ... exciting!
:D :D :D

Hahaha, yeah we only need to fill one server and I'm sure we could do it, besides, I'm sure that a lot more than just half of the players will move, I mean choosing 300ms - 1000+ ms to consistant sub 50ms... :P I know I would move, hell I would even pay the transfer fee if I had to.

As for RP / PVP+RP / PVP... eish, well I guess we would only have enough people to choose one... better be a PVP server if it ever does happen. :)

I think the max player base per server is 2000 players per faction. So 4000 players per server. (I might be wrong)

You mean on official?

Take a look at the census on warcraftrealms.com... that will give you a better idea of the pop sizes on each realm.

I highly doubt we could get our characters moved over from US/EU... it cant be done between those 2...Not mention how unstable the economy will be

If an official SA server was created, i'd only join after a few months

I'll create a brand new account and leave my EU account to rot :)

I won't transfer. I would suggest everyone rerolls and that way the whole of wow will be populated from level 1 upwards.

Yea, I'm sure I read it somewhere, let me just go check the facts quickly.

Pornolio I agree with you to some extend. However think about it. I think the max player base per server is 2000 players per faction. So 4000 players per server. (I might be wrong)

How hard can it be to fill 1 Official WoW server in SA ? forget about the millions of people we're talking about maxing out one single server ;)

@ Pittbull

The number of players varies from realm to realm... The smallest / newish realms only have a few thousand accounts BUT, thanks to X-realm battlegrounds its not such a big issue. However on a server like the one I am playing there is around 30k people ( 20k Alliance and 10k Horde).

In order to launch something like this, you pretty much need to launch a few realms and tie them together in the same battlegroup. Yes then it could work. But as it is now, I am sorry but I am very very sceptical. If countries like Australia couldnt pull it off... what are the chances of us doing it.

Who knows, maybe I will end up eating my own show with some mustard, but I am not gonna get my hopes up. I cant see this happening.

I agree... Last time I checked Lightbringer EU... it had 22k players, and that was when it was a medium pop server in TBC

No need, you can have a local SA server linked with a few EU realms to be in one BG.
We'll have a slight disadvantage when it comes to lag, but nothing we're not used to. So we'll still be in the same Battle grounds just the actual game server will be in SA. The majority of players play PvE anyway. PvP is nice on the side.

I do know lots of people only play for the PvP side of it, however they are in the minority.

Yes, that is accounts not active players at any given time. But give me a sec, I'll find it.

It doesnt require a new language. They can what they did for the Aussies and Kiwi's. They created realms on the US west coast which significantly improved their network performance.

They can do a similar thing for Africa.

Having said that, they will only do it if its profitable for them. It is afterall a business venture. Im sure their marketing people are always on the lookout for new markets. Africa is an obvious place for growth, but Blizzard arnt going to fund anyone's infrastructure.

Hmmm nope this is where I think the whole problem comes in. I remember a while back when I was on Bloodhoof there was serious network issues with one of the other realms in our battlegroup... It was almost like the servers try and compensate by making the playing field equal to everyone so that one realm does not have an advantage when it came to latency. What we saw was the following ... just using random names now :

Al'akir was problematic and everytime we joined a AB / WSG / AV or whatever, the guys would all yell in the /bg FFS not another al'akir player... everything is gonna be laggy. Your latency would be low ( as per normal ) yet the game play was laggy and jerky. But on games we had no Al'akir players, the BG playability was fine. So I suspect merging things like an South African server to a EU battlegroup would mean nasty consequences.

Either way anything X-realms means heavy syncing so I cannot see them merging a SA server with a EU battlegroup.

Ok so let's say this does happen and we have 500 people online any given time. Would we need to be part of another BG ?

I'm not a big PvP fan so it doesn't make any difference to me. I do play it sometimes as it's fun. With us SA players playing on a distant server and doing Battle grounds I can not see the problem with interlinking the BG with the Local SA server.

A simple little code would then connect the player who selects a BG to queue on that BG realm. Even if it's via another EU realm and your ping goes up. As an example.

I play on the local SA official server, I join WSG BG. The second I click that my connection moves from the local server to lets say Burning blade EU server on their queue. When I join the BG I run off the Burning blade server all together and when I'm finished and leave I'm back on the SA server.

Get what I'm saying? This can be done without anyone having to break the bank or source any foreign code to make it happen. It's just a few switches which they are currently using to interlink all various BG's to one realm.

Just needs a few guys to work for a few hours to make it happen.

Yup it would be nice... I wouldnt think twice if they had a local realm... but the sad part is PVP / BG's / Arena all form a very important part of the game. They take the PVP aspect pretty serious nowdays with Arena's. There is actual awsome rewards that can be obtained through them. I doubt blizzard would put a server down disregarding the PVP aspect side of things to accomodate PVE players.

Another thing we have to keep in mind and not forget, allthough code can do lots of things, it cannot get rid of that nasty distance between us and EU, inevitably causing us high latency.

All I am saying is, dont get to excited and get your expectations up :)

we cant even get itunes, nice thought but no chance..

iTunes won't have a market here that is why they are not in SA. Have you seen the statistics for Music piracy in SA ? iTunes will fail very badly here ;)

However, the Majority of WoW players in SA play official afaik. And the people playing on EMU servers do so because of the latency. So a Local server will pull in more users from these pirate servers. WoW and iTunes are not the same thing ;)

I agree. I play on PVE server, and BG's are very popular. At least 3 quarters of my guild spend a lot of time in battlegrounds.

This is unfortunately not true, and is the primary hurdle right now with regards to dealing with Blizzard.

Its estimated that for every one person in SA playing on a legite international server, there are about 3.5 people playing on local, illegal private servers.

At one point there were around 40,000 people playing on private servers locally. There has never been more than 9000 people using the official WoW servers in SA. It does mean however that there is a massive player base, and if a local server could consolidate it, it would be viable.

That is sad,

Tinman do these guys doing the research actually find out why these people play on EMU's ? I'm 100% sure it's because of the latency. Playing on EMU's is like shagging a Thornbush, you get to have sex, but it's damn painfull.

I can't see people playing EMU's because anything else but latency. I'm willing to bet, those people will play official is SA had such a server.

The problem, which is why private servers thrive:

It may not be official, but its free... There isn't much incentive to those emu players to try the real thing
