WoW poll on Mygaming

That is sad,

Tinman do these guys doing the research actually find out why these people play on EMU's ? I'm 100% sure it's because of the latency. Playing on EMU's is like shagging a Thornbush, you get to have sex, but it's damn painfull.

I can't see people playing EMU's because anything else but latency. I'm willing to bet, those people will play official is SA had such a server.

Indeed, latency is one of two primary reasons alongside cost of course.

Its a double edged sword unfortunately. On one hand, it illustrates a massive player base for WoW in SA. On the other hand, it makes Blizzard grumpy.

Very true.

But it should show their marketing team that there is big business to be had in Africa (South Africa). The whole world is expanding into Africa lately. I'm sure Blizzard would wan't a slice of that pie. How to convince them is another story.

I mean 7000 official players is pretty big, and then as you quoted 20 000 playing EMU. That is 27 000 WoW players in SA alone /faint.

A lot of them arent prepared to pay the subs either. I would hope they would not come on to any realm I am on, because they seem to want everything for nothing. Likely to be a bunch of ninja's and spamming for boosts.

Not all, mind you. Im sure some would play official if the latency was their only issue.

This is unfortunately not true, and is the primary hurdle right now with regards to dealing with Blizzard.

Its estimated that for every one person in SA playing on a legite international server, there are about 3.5 people playing on local, illegal private servers.

At one point there were around 40,000 people playing on private servers locally. There has never been more than 9000 people using the official WoW servers in SA. It does mean however that there is a massive player base, and if a local server could consolidate it, it would be viable.

40000 ??? By all accounts these servers hardly have anyone on them. Maybe 40000 registered.....

I agree, local crappy emu servers can't support more than a handful of players connected at once ? Surely these are estimated numbers due to SA having a piracy problem?

lol ? How is that in any way similar or relevant? Two completely different concepts here.

Its very relevant, its about the volume game and returns to shareholders, profits, you think Blizz is there for your charity. If Apple can't see any reason to be in africa how on earth do you think Blizz will.

Africa doesn't have the volume so support any of these volume driven internet based produces particualarly in a global recession.

Nope, you missed the most valid point again.

iTunes will not come to SA as the music in SA is pirated at one of the higest rates in the world. I will never buy tunes of iTunes. If I buy music it will be a cd because I like the cover and/or support the band.

If not I just download it. That is the reason iTunes will not come to SA plain and simple.

Exactly :)

You see Blatman, if I download music it sounds exactly the same as if I bought it from the store or iTunes.

However there is a very big difference between a crappy emu server and an official local server. Hence the fact that piracy will effect the possibility of something like iTunes coming to SA in a much greater way than it would effect the possibility of an official WoW server coming here.

Therefore you can't compare the two and say that just because Apple won't bring iTunes to SA that Blizzard won't bring an official server here, because whereas maybe iTunes won't make a profit here, Blizzard most definitely could, if we have enough players to fill an official WoW server here the subscription fees from these players will be enough and more to pay for maintenance, bandwidth etc.

For example, say we get 7k players at R180pm. That's R1,260,000 per month.
More than enough to cover monthly salaries and bandwidth costs to keep a single official server running here.

If an official server comes, I want an Afrikaans WoW client.

But it won't happen.

Hehe ye :)

All jokes aside, even if an SA server comes I wouldnt move. 50% of the game is about the social aspect, new people, overseas cultures, and in turn being able to tell them about mine.

I would agree with Wit8litz there I most likely wont move either have built up a great friend base and I am in a great guild latency would be awesome at 50ms but would have to reroll and lvl up again (boring).

I accept your point on Itunes, but still disagree to the extent that if you think R1million a month (rand nogal) will excite the muti-national that owns Blizzard you are sadly mistaken. The corporate executive that flies out here probably earns more than that.

Blatman, you are correct, but ... you're not including Blizzards strategy regarding the rest of Africa. Obviously we don't know what that is, but, they must be thinking of expanding into Africa.
