WoW poll on Mygaming

Hi Guys

I don't know why there is a poll on this specific topic but who knows, maybe SA has a sponsor for hosting an Official WoW server. Anyway, just thought you might want to add your vote. Who knows, maybe Mygaming knows something we don't :p

Heck, they don't need to set up a South African server, but a Southern Africa server.

Africa is finally waking up to the idea of broadband, so here is a huge opportunity for Blizzard to start another income stream.

As for existing characters, it would be easy for blizzard to identify players from Africa and offer them free character migration to the new server. That way the server can start with a large population in place.

Come on guys stop dreaming the chances WOW will put up a server here is next to almost nothing. 1st its to expensive with the bandwith caps we have in this stupid country, 2nd they would need to setup a server and for the amount of wow players in this country or in Africa for that matter its just not financialy viable for them they not just going to throw allot of money away. 3rd our line speeds will still be a problem when the server connects overseas at 4mbps its just not fast enough (stand to be corrected).

There is always one negative charged bastard who runs into the possitive charged ones in Naxx. You know what that does if it happens right ?

If a company is sponsoring the BW then there is nothing expensive about it. You are aware that there is companies in SA making in excess of R 50bn a year right ? If a company was to aproach Blizzard and say the will provide the BW for free and pay for the server and maintenance do you think Blizzard will turn it down ?

Seriously. Yes, it might just be a distant dream but if everyone sits back and think of reasons why it will not happen, no one will try and get one arranged for SA.

Your post should have rather just stuck in your mind instead of on here ;)

Fair enough Pitbull ok so what company do u think will want to sponsor a Wow Server then? I am just saying what allot of Wow players are thinking lol

Heya Pitbull :)

I wish it was that simple. Its really not just about the bandwidth and hosting of the server or even the server itself. Those are tiny drops in the bucket that makes a wow server / realm.

Remember, a server doesnt look after itself, you need proper support guys at support centers... as much and great as remote hosting sound, you still need people onsite. Then there is ofc things like BG's. How would you integrate a SA hosted server into a battleground group like Blackout which comprises of 10 / 15 other 20 MS latency servers hosted in EU with a South African server. The syncing etc between the servers would be something like running on a car with 3 highly inflated tyres and one flat tyre. ( the flat one being our server ). Stop dreaming about this guys... wont happen... not unless Africa / South Africa gets TONS AND TONS AND TONS of people playing. We just dont have that.
 
Read up on some of the history. Russia got their own servers last year, with free migration to them. So it's deffo worth looking at. I would like to however see this server tied into other Battle groups though.

This is a good point, Russia's population was 142 Million people as of January 1st 2009, SA is sitting on about 48 Million.

So ok, we are 1/3 of the size of Russia, and I'm guessing a smaller % of our population has access to the internet and the ability to pay monthly fee's to play WoW.

However let's consider that they made servers not just for SA, but for Southern Africa as a whole, then our numbers might start to look closer to the number of Russian players. Also considering that our broadband infrastructure is improving drastically thanks to the coming Fifa 2010 World Cup (they are laying fiber optic like crazy, not to mention that new undersea cable or whatever) and the idea of an official local WoW server isn't necessarily as unlikely as some people are still saying it is.

Yes, maybe we can't expect one just yet, but if the number of WoW players continues to increase as it currently is, and our infrastructure continues to improve why is it so difficult to accept the possibility that something like this could just happen?

As for costs of running the servers... our R180pm is worth just as much as as the euro's they are paying. Yes, our bandwidth is more expensive, but even the cost of that is dropping as hard as we struggle to believe that.

I for one will keep hoping it happens, if it doesn't... fine, I just keep playing on European servers.

You guys are comparing us... with a country thats just under 100 million people stronger than us. Not too mention of our 48 million people 80 % of them most likely never seen or owned a computer. Not even to mention playing WoW.

Then the poor example of us catching up on the technology front. Come on, if we talk of Africa / South Africa as a whole, for anyone that worked in any ISP rolling into African countries with internet presence... you would know... majority of the African countries with some form of decent internet access still rely on satelite bandwidth. Satelite BW = latency issues again.

Now, also... WoW is reaching the end of its lifespan. It will be replaced in a year or two with a new generation MMO coming out, its no secret, its been announced ages back. Now to say "but, but, but, we are catching up ... we will be sorted out in a few years..."

Come on... sorry if this sounds negative, but hell come on lets be realistic people.

I can tell you right now that an official local WoW server is currently being looked at.

iGame (iBurst's gaming subsidiary) is looking at hosting a peer server, and Megarom (WoW's local distributor) is currently in talks with Blizzard. There are an estimated 7000 SA players playing on official servers (according to Bliz), and around 20000 playing on the pvt servers (according to iGame insiders).

Unfortunately, the high ammount of private WoW servers in SA has made Blizzard less than pleasant to negotiate with, but steps are being made.

An article will be up on MyGaming very shortly.

I had a feeling about Mygaming :)

This could turn out to be the best thing to have happened in SA gaming till date and it looks like Mygaming is behind this drive :)

Pornolio I agree with you to some extend. However think about it. I think the max player base per server is 2000 players per faction. So 4000 players per server. (I might be wrong)

How hard can it be to fill 1 Official WoW server in SA ? forget about the millions of people we're talking about maxing out one single server ;)
